10What some of you said

moments in it and caused my sister to throw the

11The 2 PsPassive vs. Participatory
- Passive Movies, TV Books, for some life.
Participatory Games (video, role playing
(cowboys and indians for example) sports)
12Can children tell the difference?
13Can an Adult?
14What Can We DO?
- Duke Farris of Game Revolution writes, Gaming is
also a new medium, one that has recently become
wildly successful. Young people play them and old
folks don't understand, so they must be bad.
Don't forget that in the 1950's, rock and roll
was linked to youth violence in the same way. The
hedonistic, tribal rhythms were going to turn
America's youth into a bunch of violent maniacs.
Rock and roll was banned and censored all over
the country. A bill was even put before Congress
in 1955 to ban rock and roll altogether.
15As Game Designers
- Have a purpose
- Does it help tell the story
- Remember your audience
16As Parents
- Educate your children
- Watch, and play, what they play.
- Take an active part in your child's life
"To shield children right up to the age of 18
from exposure to violent descriptions and images
would not only be quixotic, but deforming it
would leave them unequipped to cope with the
world as we know it. Federal Court of Appeals
Judge Richard Posner
17Will it Be Enough?
- Many of the games which include violent content
and are sold in the and some with far more
violence are also sold in foreign markets. But
the incidence of violent crime in these non-U.S.
markets is considerably lower than in the . This
suggests that the cause of violent crime lies
elsewhere. - Entertainment Software Association
(ESA)
18Where do we go from here?
- Violent crime, particularly among the young, has
decreased dramatically during since the early
1990s while video games have steadily increased
in popularity and use. - Thirty-five percent of American parents say they
play computer and video games. Further, 80
percent of gamer parents say they play video
games with their kids. Sixty-six percent feel
that playing games has brought their families
closer together.
19Conclusion
- Violence is part of our culture, it has shaped
our world from the beginning of time and it will
continue to shape it. It is evident in almost
every facet of our society and yet we have found
a way to evolve and develop a largely peaceful
and law abiding society. Will violent video games
cause us to grow up and become more violent? Who
knows, but we are the 'parents' of the gaming
industry and what we (as game designers) must do
is to make sure violence has a reason for being
there, that it serves the story we are trying to
tell.
