Title: Review of NAEFS Variables

1
Review of NAEFS Variables
  • NAEFS workshop Oct 6-8 2008, NCEP
  • Lewis Poulin, MSC-CMC
  • Implementation. and Operational services
  • lewis.poulin_at_ec.gc.ca
  • With information and assistance provided by
  • Normand Gagnon, MSC-CMC
  • Dick Wobus, Yuejian Zhu, NCEP

Managing NAEFS variables - some considerations
  • How will increase in no. of variables impact file
    sizes, operational timings?
  • If timings are impacted
  • High and low priority variables?
  • High and low priority exchange files?
  • Delay products because we are waiting for low
    priority variables?
  • Manage differences for same variables between
    centers
  • Variables covering different intervals between
    centers
  • Ex APCP, Flux (CMC cumulative, NCEP /6 hour)
  • TCLD (CMC Instant cloud cover, NCEP 6 hour
    average)
  • Do we want variables to converge to same
    definitions (eventually) for all centers
  • Consistency of coding in GRIB2 between centers
  • Testing of GRIB2 encoding/decoding can be time
    consuming
  • NCEP standard, vs WMO grib2 standard
  • Document clearly for users

Managing NAEFS variables - some considerations
  • Adding variables to dataset not always easy
  • Manage expectations, requirements via a list,
    well documented
  • What are short, mid and long term goal for
    variables?
  • May take long periods of time to add variables
that require in house development work to make
    those available
  • ?? What if ?? implement new variables same time
    each year?
  • Adding variables at set times may make it easier
    to plan for
  • Of course can add variables any time if ready,
    otherwise set times
  • Each center has variables expert and contact
    person
  • CMC Normand Gagnon, NCEP Dick Wobus
  • Other centers should ID their variables expert
  • See additional info of previous work on next
    slides

Previous work on variablesNew NAEFS Variables
  • Variables in or available to be added to GEFS for
    NAEFS exchange
  • GEFS status on Jan. 16, 2008 (D. Wobus)
  • CMC status on Mar. 20 2008 (N. Gagnon)

Proposition of CMC
  • U,V,T,RH at 100 ,50 and 10 hPa i.e. wind,
    temperature, relative humidity
  • DPT at 2m i.e. dew-point
  • LHTFL, SHTFL (total accumulation) i.e. surface
    latent and sensible heat flux
  • DSWRF, DLWRF (total accumulation) i.e. down
surface short and long wave radiation
  • OLR (total accumulation) i.e. outgoing long wave
    radiation
  • WEASD, SNOD i.e. snow water equivalent and snow
    depth
  • Temperature and soil moisture at level 1 (0-10
    cm)
  • BLUEavailable via TIGGE
