  common drugs of abuse
• After this training session a student shall be

• Describe common drugs of abuse
• Describe effects and health hazards of abuse

Ecstasy

• MDMA this is a synthetic amphetamine
• Main party drug of the rave scene
• Also known as X, E, and Adam
• Effects last from 2-4 hours and Include
• speedkeeps users energetic
• headaches, nausea, and depression
  inability to get erection(males) or
  aroused(female)
• heatstroke and heart attack

Inhalants

• Consumer product chemicals
• Short-term effects include heart palpitations,
  breathing problems, dizziness, headache and
  irreversible brain damage
• Ways death can occur from inhalants
• asphyxia, suffocation
• choking on vomit
• suicide, homicide and in3uries were responsible
  for 77 of the deaths of inhalant users
• sudden sniffing death syndrome, cardiac arrest

Ketamine Special K

• Veterinary Anesthetic
• Also known as K, Ket, Vitamin K
• Psychedelic drug causes hallucinations and
  feeling disconnected, effects can last several
  hours
• Overdose will cause unconsciousness and nausea
• taken orally or nasally

LSD

• Most common hallucinogenic drug
• Effects are unpredictable and dependent on
• personality
• mood
• surroundings
• other drugs taken
• Effects can last 12 hours
• Not addictive, but tolerance builds

Crack/Cocaine

• Illicit stimulant and local anesthetic
• Crack is processed from powdered cocaine to
  create a more powerful rock which is smoked.
• Crack is highly addictive with very low treatment
  success
• short term effects include high blood pressure,
  increased heart rate, rapid breathing with many
  other serious side effects

Anabolic Steroids

• Synthetic derivatives of male hormone
• Athletes use to bulk up quickly
• Health hazards
• severe acne
• breast development in males
• excessive body hair in females
• high blood pressure
• heart and liver disease
• aggressive behavior, mood swings, and depression

Methamphetamine

• Highly abused stimulant drugs
• Also known as speed, meth, crank, or crystal
• Effects last 4-6 hours
• Health hazards
• heart and blood vessel toxicity
• paranoia
• malnutrition
• heart and nervous system strain

Marijuana

• Marijuana contains hundreds of different
  chemicals including THC
• Changes thinking, learning and behavior
• Effects include
• brain chemistry changes
• lung disease and breathing difficulty
• cardiac stress
• weakens the immune system
• decrease in sperm count, abnormal menstrual cycle
