Key Concepts
36
Key Concepts Effective Term vs. Term
  • In Banner, Catalog records based on effective
    term
  • starting term for range of terms over which the
    record is active
  • not a record for every term, for example
  • the first record is effective (i.e. active) for
all terms from Fall 04 - Fall 05, instead of
having a separate record for each term
  • Reports are difficult, because you cant just
create a report for effective term Fall 2005
there may not be a record for Fall 2005!
  • Have to create complicated logic to pick whatever
record was active for Fall 2005

37
Key Concepts Effective Term vs. Term (cont.)
  • In the EDW, Catalog records based on term
  • Create a record for every term, for example
  • Reports are much easier, because you can pick the
term you want and records for that term will be
    included
  • For example, term Fall 2005 will give you the
correct result, because there is a record for
    Fall 2005

38
Key Concepts Course Records in Banner (page1)
  • Separate course record for each listing of a
    course in the Catalog
  • For example, at UIS Auditing Concepts and
Responsibilities cross-listed in Catalog as both
Accountancy 464 and Public Administration 421
  • Banner has a separate course record for each
  • Subject code and course number used to uniquely
identify each course (e.g. ACC 464)
  • Course Identifier used to uniquely identify each
overall course (e.g. Auditing Concepts and
    Responsibilities)
  • as cross-listings will each have same Course ID
  • also applies to renumbered Courses both the
original listing and the new listing will have
    same Course ID

39
Key Concepts Course vs. Course Listing records
in EDW (page2)
  • Course Listing record structured like in Banner
  • For example, two separate records for Auditing
    Concepts and Responsibilities Accountancy 464
    and Public Administration 421
  • Subject code and course number used to uniquely
identify each course (e.g. ACC 464, PAD 421)
  • Course record corresponds to the overall course
  • For example, only a single Course record for
    Auditing Concepts and Responsibilities will
exist in the EDW, regardless of how many
different listings are included in the Catalog
  • Course Identifier used to uniquely identify the
Course record and the concept of an overall
Course record does not exist in Banner
  • If existing Subject/Course Number combination
re-used for completely different Course, a
different Course ID will be assigned and a new
record in the EDW will exist
  • Basic info from the controlling Course Listing
included in Course record, such as course title
and description, department, credit and contact
hours which is useful for creating lists or
counts that require a single record per Course,
    e.g. for some external surveys

40
Key Concepts Course vs. Course Listing records
in EDW (page3)
  • Course Listings for Accounting at UIS
  • Course Listings for Auditing Concepts Resp

41
Key Concepts Section Records in Banner (page4)
  • Specific offering of a Course (Subject/Course
    Number) for a particular Term
  • CRN used to uniquely identify Section records
this is the call number used by students to
    register for a course
  • e.g. CRN 0085 offering of ACC 464 for Spring
2003 term at UIS that meets on Monday evenings
  • Often multiple Sections of the same Course are
offered during a Term, i.e. multiple Section
records (CRNs) for a single Course
  • Different Sections may represent different
    meeting times, locations, and instructors
  • For cross-listed courses, two different Section
records refer to the same meeting time, location,
    and instructor
  • May be separate Sections for different components
of a course, such as a lecture and lab (students
register for multiple Sections for a given
    course)
  • Packaging can also be used group multiple
course components, e.g. lecture and lab, into a
single CRN (students register for single Section
    for given course)

42
Key Concepts Section vs. Session Records in
Banner (page 5)
  • Section record structured like in Banner
  • Single record for each CRN
  • Session record in the EDW represents a specific
component of a Course offering for a term
  • Single Session record for each component, even
when it is listed more than once in the Schedule
  • e.g. Auditing Concepts and Responsibilities may
be listed in the Schedule under ACC 464 with a
CRN of 0085 and also listed under PAD 421 with a
    CRN of 2820
  • Both of these CRNs actually refer to the same
Course, meeting time and place, and instructor
  • Each CRN would have a separate Section record,
but only a single Session record for Auditing
Concepts and Responsibilities, i.e. the Session
record is based on the Course (using Course
Identifier) and not the Course Listing
    (Subject/Course Number)

43
Key Concepts Section vs. Session Records in
Banner (page6)
  • Also applies to components listed in multiple
    CRNs using packaging
  • Even through a given component listed more than
once in the Schedule, only one Session record
  • Concept of a Session record does not exist in
    Banner
  • Record derived in the EDW based on Section and
    Meeting records in Banner
  • Some of the information from the Meeting record
in Banner is moved to the Session record in the
EDW, such as credit hours and schedule type.
  • Session record is very useful for many types of
counts and totals (e.g. total credit hours),
because it eliminates double-counting due to
    packaging and cross-listing

4 Options for Saving
  • Option 1 File gt Save gt .rep
  • This is the Business Objects default. This saves
the document to your hard drive. The location is
under My Documents gt My Business Objects
    Documents gt User Docs
  • Option 2 File gt Save As gt .xls
  • This allows you to choose the location to save

has been opened via Excel using the File Format
    Wizard.
  • Option 4 File gt Export/Import To Repository
  • This sends the document to be stored on the
Decision Support server. You can then retrieve
the document from any location or computer.
  • This option is very useful when you have created
the document at a workstation that is not your
own and you want to be able to retrieve it back
at your desk or you create the document at your
desk and want to be able to retrieve it in a lab
    setting.
