Who is Martin Luther King Jr.?
  • Born 15 January 1929 to Martin Luther King Sr., a
    Baptist minster, and Alberta Williams King.
  • King has two other siblings a sister Christine
    and a brother Alfred.
  • He excelled in school and skipped 9th and 12th
    grades.
  • He started college at Morehouse University at the
    age of 15.

Education
  • He got his Bachelors Degree in Sociology from
    Morehouse University in Atlanta.
  • He attended Crozer Theological Seminary in 1951
    and also studied at the University of
    Pennsylvania while he was attending there.
  • In September 1951 he began his doctoral studies
    in Systematic Theology at Boston University.
  • He also studied at Harvard.

Dr. Kings Later Life
  • He married his wife Coretta Scott King in 1953.
  • Together they had four children, two sons and two
    daughters.
  • He served as a Baptist minster at several
    different churches in the South at one point he
    and his father where both pastors at the same
    church.
  • He was elected president of the Montgomery
    Improvement Plan, an organization in charge of
    the bus boycotts in Alabama.

Accomplishments
  • He was Vice President of the National Sunday
    School and Baptist Teaching Union Congress of the
    National Baptist Convention.
  • Dr. King was elected to membership in several
    learned societies including the prestigious
    American Academy of Arts and Sciences in
    Cambridge, Massachusetts.
  • He was an actively participated in the struggle
    for civil rights in various places across the
    nation.
  • He published six books in his lifetime.

  • Selected as one of the outstanding personalities
    by Time Magazine in 1957.
  • Won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. This made him
    the youngest man, 2nd American, and 3rd black man
    to win this award.
  • He was named the Man of the Year by Time Magazine
    in 1963.
  • He received the John F. Kennedy award in 1964.
  • He also received nine other awards and
    recognitions for his work.

Death
  • Dr. King was shot on 4 April 1968 while standing
    on a balcony in Memphis, Tennessee.
  • The man who shot him was James Earl Ray.
  • He was arrested on 8 June 1968 in London,
    England, where he had fled.
  • He was sentenced to 99 years in the state
    penitentiary.
  • In 1999 the city (Memphis), state (Tennessee),
    and federal government were also accused of
    conspiracy in Dr. Kings assassination.

Dr. King Memorial
Dr. King and Coretta King share a tomb at the
memorial in Atlanta, Georgia. His wife Coretta
passed away in 2006.

  • He actually met Mohandas Gandhi in 1959 on a trip
    to India.
  • Dr. King borrowed his ideas of active nonviolence
    from Gandhi.
  • His acts of nonviolence included sit-ins,
    protests, and marches.
  • He was jailed upwards of 20 for his active
    nonviolence.
  • He actually took the 54,123 he got from winning
    the Nobel Peace Prize and donated it to the civil
    rights movement.
  • Dr. King also spoke out against the Vietnam War
    and on behalf of poor Americans.

  • Dr. King was most active in the civil rights

    1983 and was designated to be the third Monday in
    January.
  • Not all states recognized Martin Luther King Jr.
    Day in 1983.
  • January 2000 was actually the first time all 50
    states celebrated the holiday.
