Firewall Methods

• Firewalls use one or more of three methods to
  control traffic flowing in and out of the
  network
• Packet filtering packets (small chunks of data)
  are analyzed against a set of filters. Packets
  that make in through the filters are sent to the
  requesting system and all others are discarded.
• Proxy service Information from the Internet is
  retrieved by the firewall and then sent to the
  requesting system and vice versa.
• Stateful Inspection A newer method that doesnt
  examine the contents of each packet but instead
  compares certain key parts of the packet to a
  database of trusted information.

• Software Firewalls Most of them are used for
  WINNT only such as Norton and McAfee.
• Hardware Firewalls Any VPN build-in Router that
  can be used on WINNT, MAC, LINUX and UNIX.

What is VPN? The principle of VPN

• A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is a private
  network that actually exists within a public
  network. This consists of a point-to-point tunnel
  through which users can send and receive data.
  The data packets are encrypted to provide for a
  true private connection to the endpoint (i.e. -
  corporate network). These packets cannot be
  decrypted without the correct encryption keys.
  Once the VPN tunnel is established, the client
  machine is authenticated and registered on the
  network. Given the proper privileges, it can then
  communicate directly with other machines as if it
  were actually on that local network. VPN is
  definitely an excellent technology for
  telecommuters and the Barricade Plus provides the
  user with the proper resources to accomplish
  this.

Advanced Settings - Address Mapping

• Some applications require multiple connections,
  such as Internet gaming, video conferencing,
  Internet telephony, and others. These
  applications may require several thousand ports
  to remain open, hence they may not work when
  Network Address Translation (NAT) is enabled. If
  you need to run applications that require
  multiple connections, you can use Address Mapping
  and Virtual Server to specify additional public
  ports to be opened for each application.
• Use the "Address Mapping" option to limit the
  number of public IP addresses required from the
  ISP and maintain the privacy and security of the
  local network.

Configuring TCP/IPDynamic IP on Windows XP 

• Click the "Start" button and choose "Control
  Panel".

  Connections" option, and then click "Network
  Connections".
