2What is the gap?
- Many small and medium sized business (SMBs) do
not have sufficient data recovery plans and
procedures in place - Many large businesses dont either!
- Studies show that as many as 70 percent of
businesses that suffer major data loss are out of
business within a year - Recovery after data loss is harder for SMBs
- Limited staff/expertise
- Limited financial resources to sustain loss of
business - Limited financial resources to deploy
enterprise-class (Fortune 100) computing
environments - Costs can easily be in the millions
3Why is data lost?
- Data is lost in many ways
- Hardware failure the failure rate of all
hardwareis 100 -- eventually, everything fails - Software error/corruption
- Human error no way to prevent this!
- Malicious attack virus, hacker, terrorism, etc.
- Environmental disaster fire, flood, burst pipes,
etc. - Power failures increasing as old power grids are
overwhelmed - Equipment loss/theft a great deal of business
data is now on laptops which are routinely stolen
at airports, hotels, etc. - Laptops can be damaged in car accidents, dropped,
etc.
4How to begin?
- Ask the hard question if I lost all my data
today, how sure am I that I would get it back? - Do you feel comfortable thinking about this?
- The question is not what are you doing to protect
your data, but what do you do when you need to
get it back? - Backup is meaningless if restore doesnt work!
- Understand your own needs
- How quickly to I need to be back on-line?
- Instant recovery can be achieved, but is
extraordinarily costly - Can my business sustain one down day? two days? a
week? or only hours?
5How to begin?
- Tape backup is the most prevalent SMB way of
protecting data, but how safe is it? - When was the last time you tested a restore?
- Are your backups getting done every night?
- How much impact will losing a day of data cause?
- Last nights backup doesnt have todays data!
- Again when was the last time you tested a
restore? - Are your tapes in good shape? Or old and worn
out? - When was the last time you tested a restore?
- Always keep in mind the only thing you cannot
replace is your data - Any hardware can be replaced, but once data is
lost, it is lost forever
6Looking at solutions
- Start thinking about SANs and virtual storage
- Yes, you can afford them
- Start thinking about duplicating data on disk
- Disk prices are lower than ever
- Start thinking about off-site replication
- Doesnt have to cost a fortune
- Start thinking about new ways to do tape backup
- Moving to a SAN will help
7SANs
- Centralizing data storage provides easier
management and increased protection - Virtualized storage makes storage provisioning
and protection simple - Costs are not prohibitive!
- The SMB does not need to look for enterprise
class solutions that cost high six- and
seven-figures - Entry-level storage solutions provides tremendous
price/performance benefits well within reach - Dont think of SANs as Fibre Channel only
- IP-based SANs are a reality today
- Use your existing infrastructure, cabling, staff
expertise
8Duplicate Data on Disk
- Use data mirroring to keep two copies of data up
and running at all times - Immediate protection from hard disk failures with
zero impact on applications - As drive sizes increase, more data is lost with
each failure! - Data should be mirrored to separate disk devices
to protect from device-level failure or user
error - Incremental cost of more disk is relatively small
- Fibre Channel disk enclosures can be located in
separate locations for protection from localized
environment mishaps
9Sample SAN deployment
Application servers support for multiple
operating systems
Switches Fibre Channel or Gigabit Ethernet -
your choice!
GigE or FC
Storage virtualization appliances for management
and data protection services
Dual storage devices for mirrored data and
physical separation
Virtualized storage for ease of management
10Offsite replication
- Protect data on disk for more granular protection
and easier recovery - Make use of second sites to hold data
- Each site can replicate to the other
- Replicate branch offices to central site
- Avoid tape handling at multiple locations where
expertise may not exist - Asynchronous replication modes do not require
tremendous amount of bandwidth
11Offsite replication - host based
- Software resides on each server
- Data is copied to other server or storage
appliance - Advantages
- Easy to deploy
- Uses standard IP networks for data replication
- Does not require SAN infrastructure
- Replication to central appliance allows for
consolidated backup - Challenges
- Must be managed at each server
- Different products for every operating system
12Host-based replication

13Offsite replication - network based
- Software resides in the storage network on
appliance - Data is copied from one storage appliance to
another - Advantages
- Single point of management
- Supports multiple servers from one device
- Single product for all operating systems
- Uses standard IP network for data replication
- Challenges
- Requires a SAN infrastructure
14Network-based replication

15Tape backup
- SANs simplify tape backup procedures
- Backup for all servers is centralized
- Leverage single tape library, instead of multiple
tape drives - Virtualization appliance eliminates need for
costly SAN tape backup options - Run image-based backups directly from storage
appliance for fastest backup possible - Run file-by-file backup from standalone backup
server using data snapshots - Both methods are serverless and have no impact on
operations
16Conclusions
- Seriously evaluate your disaster recovery
policies - Do you feel your company is safe with your
current plans? - Consider alternative methods
- Less expensive than you might think
- Less complicated than you might think
- Much more important than you might think!
- Your first major data loss is likely to be your
last - Dont fall through the gap!
