16They are high level strategic frameworks to
guide and influence public agencies, businesses,
and the community. Our own RSDF provides an
agreed vision and set of guiding principles for
the South West. It also offers objectives and
suggested indicators against a series of regional
themes which unlike the RSDF's Vision' and
principles' are intended to be reviewed and
updated. You can view and download a pdf of the
full RSDF at the regional section of
www.oursouthwest.com or download a summary
checklist
here .
Why do we need it?
Sustainable Development aims for a good quality
of life for everyone, including future
generations who are entitled to expect that we
will do all we can to protect their quality of
life. The RSDF satisfies the need for a stand
alone Framework against which the sustainability
of all regional strategies, policy-making and
initiatives can be assessed.
The RSDF is for all organisations in the
region, be they public agencies, business or
community organisations. Its effect will also
benefit those who live, work or visit the region.
The principles of the RSDF must influence all our
decision making.

Government Office for the South West
commissioned Sustainability South West to prepare
the RSDF on behalf of the region. Based on many
months of consultation throughout the region and
prepared in liaison with key regional agencies,
the RSDF is endorsed by
The South West Regional Assembly.
What does it say about our approach to
sustainable development in the South West?
Based on the responses of consultation, it
reaches a consensus about our regions
priorities. Consensus does not mean that everyone
will agree with every part of the RSDF but that
we will all consent to trying to work within its
principles recognising the benefits for the long
term future of the South West region.
The
Is the South West Sustainable? section of this
website addresses these priorities in more
detail.
What is the sustainable development vision for
the region?
The South West must remain a region with a
beautiful and diverse environment. By working
together and applying the principles of
sustainability we can achieve lasting economic
prosperity and social justice, whilst protecting
that environment. This approach will secure a
higher quality of life now and for the future.
What are the sustainability principles? The
RSDFs principles are ECONOMY supporting a
diverse, thriving and sustainable economy WORK
offering satisfying, fairly-paid work for all
LOCAL NEEDS using local goods and services
LEARNING providing lifelong learning for all
and developing education for sustainable
development BASIC NEEDS reducing inequalities
in meeting everyones basic needs ACCESS
offering inclusive (car-free if possible) access
to essential services HEALTH WELL-BEING
promoting everyones well-being especially
through prevention POLLUTION promoting safe
levels of pollution and reducing CO2 emissions
RESOURCES using energy, water and natural
materials efficiently BIODIVERSITY protecting
natural habitats WASTE eliminating and
minimising waste SAFETY ensuring everyone
lives without fear of crime or persecution
DISTINCTIVENESS protecting and celebrating
local distinctiveness LEISURE providing sports
and arts opportunities for all DEMOCRACY
empowering everyone to participate in decision
making SSWs
Measuring Up campaign promotes the RSDFs
principles with a sustainability ruler, which
encourages people to ask themselves a series of
key sustainability questions.
Who is taking the RSDF forward? The Regional
Assembly is monitoring progress on the Framework.
In 2002 they produced a progress report on the
RSDF which asked whether the region was Moving
in the Right Direction in terms of progress
towards sustainability. SSW uses the Framework
as the basis for all its sustainability
appraisals and project work. The RSDF belongs to
the region YOU can take it forward yourself.
