CAD File Interchange formats

• IGES Initial Graphics Exchange Specification
• DXF Drawing eXchange Format
• Standard exchange format for 2D CAD (developed by
  AutoDesk)
• STEP STandard for the Exchange of Product model
  Data
• An emerging format that can carry more
  information including machining information such
  as model, materials, and tools
• STL STereoLithography
• Initially was the format for use with STL rapid
  prototyping machines
• Is now the standard format for use with most
  rapid prototyping machines

Design to use purchased parts!

• It is usually much less expensive to buy parts
  rather than make them yourself
• When designing, make sure you use components that
  are available
• What happens if you specify a part in your
  machine that is not readily available
• Look in catalogs
• Call vendors and make sure the parts are readily
  available
• Standard parts are much less expensive and easier
  to get then custom parts

• A great source for a large variety of standard
  industrial parts
• The prices will be higher since they are a
  distributor (but not unreasonable)
• You can buy small quantities
• You can generally get your parts in a hurry (most
  parts can ship overnight)
