4
Marketability Ad Hoc Goals and Objectives
  • Joint CAG/SA/ISTO work team to evaluate and
develop a work plan to support conformity
assessment initiatives in support of relevant
    IEEE standards
  • Utilize initial project as a real-time pilot
  • Initial focus on IEEE Std. 1625 revision
  • Develop an overall framework for a conformity
assessment program in support of IEEE Standards.

5
Update from 7 Nov CAG Teleconference
  • Discussions with IEEE 1625 WG Chair
  • Ad Hoc review of next steps
  • 4 Members of Ad Hoc participated in IEEE 1625 WG
    Meetings
  • 15-16 November San Jose, CA (Host Sony)
  • Presentation to IEEE 1625 WG Phil Wennblom
  • Corporate Program and CAG Overview
  • Review of Roles and Responsibilities (re IEEE
    1625 WG)

6
Roles and Responsibilities re1625
  • IEEE-SA CAG
  • Develops and amends model procedures for entity
    WGs
  • Can be a sponsor of entity WGs
  • Oversees development of programs that can provide
    support for WGs
  • Conformity Assessment is an example
  • IEEE 1625 WG
  • Adapts procedures for use by the 1625 WG
  • Responsible for funding of the 1625 WG program
  • Responsible for all technical decisions and
    content
  • Responsible for decisions on whether a conformity
assessment program will be part of the 1625
    revision effort

7
IEEE Std. 1625 Update
  • First 1625 WG Meeting held on 15-16 November
  • Successful first meeting
  • Over 40 participants represented
  • Apple, Battery Assn of Japan, Dell, Celgard,
    Compal Electronics, Exponent, ExxonMobil,
Gateway, HP, IBM, IEEE, IEEE-ISTO, Intel,
Intersil, Inventec, Lenovo, Lishen, Micro Power,
    Panasonic, PowerPrecise, Samsung, Sanyo, SGS,
    Sony, Tiax, Toshiba, Tyco, Underwriters
    Laboratories.

8
IEEE Std. 1625 Update (contd.)
  • Sub-group on Compliance Formed
  • David Ling (HP) Chair
  • Explore the need for a compliance program for the
revised 1625 standard in the context of all
potential options (with the possibility that an
option would be no program). The subgroup would
return a recommendation to the working group by
the end of the working group development phase
(i.e., before the sponsor ballot begins).

9
Next Steps for Conformity Assessment Ad Hoc
  • 1 priority is continued work to develop an
overall framework for a conformity assessment
program in support of IEEE Standards.
  • Deliverable intended to address issues and
    propose recommendations
  • Update at next SA CAG Meeting
  • Identification and review of potential pilot
    projects continues
  • Ongoing dialogue with 1625 Conformity Assessment
    sub-group

10
Conformity AssessmentFramework Outline
  • Major components
  • Structure / Framework- (Peter)
  • Trademark / Brand- (Edward)
  • Strategies and roles in support of trademark /
    branding / logo programs
  • Legal Structure / Liability- (Edward/Yvette)
  • Understand liabilities involved and how to manage
    to appropriate levels
  • Marketing / PR- (Edward/Karen M)
  • Implementation / Operations (Peter/Edward)
  • Role of IEEE vs. 3rd Parties

11
CAG / BoG Caucus Brief Overview
  • Presentation to include
  • Introduction / Background
  • Ad Hoc Participants
  • Conformity Assessment Ad Hoc Goals and Objectives
  • IEEE-ISTO / IEEE-SA Opportunities for
    Collaboration Going Beyond the Standards
  • Pilot Project Focus
  • Conformity Assessment Plan Outline
  • Next Steps
  • Summary
  • Discussion / Feedback

12
Drivers for a Conformity Assessment Program at
IEEE
  • Service to standards developers- can facilitate
    market implementation
  • Changes/improvements can be incorporated in IEEE
    standards
  • Market need to provide assurance of compliance-
    WiFi Alliance, 1394 TA
  • Need to protect IEEE trademarks and brand from
    misuse
  • Leverage IEEE-SA and IEEE-ISTO capabilities to
    initiate conformity assessment activities, in
parallel with standards development, to speed
    market adoption

13
Summary
  • Conformity Assessment Ad Hoc has proactively
pursued its deliverables and goals with weekly
    meetings
  • Industry support for IEEE 1625 revision with the
evaluation of a possible compliance program.
  • A lot of work to do to develop an overall
framework for a conformity assessment program in
    support of IEEE Standards.
