Welcome to our SOLAR SYSTEM
3
The order of the planets in our Solar System
4
Todays lesson is to visualize just how BIG our
Solar System really is. We will do this by
taking a Planet Walk. Our scale will be 1 inch
100,000 miles What we Need Sun yellow ball,
diameter 8.0" Mercury a brown pinhead,
diameter 0.03" Venus a yellow pushpin,
diameter 0.08" Earth a blue pushpin, diameter
0.08" Mars a red pinhead, diameter
0.03" Jupiter a yellow ball, diameter
0.9" Saturn a purple ball, diameter 0.7" Uranus
a silver ball, diameter, 0.3" Neptune a
silver ball, 0.3"
Now using this scale of 1 inch 100,000 miles,
lets pace out our solar system. See the next
slide for the number of paces.
5
The Thousand Yard Model
Sun Mercury 10 paces Venus another 9
paces Earth another 7 paces Mars another 14
paces Jupiter another 95 paces Saturn another
112 paces Uranus another 249 paces Neptune
another 281 paces Pluto another 242 paces
6
And going even further
If we keep our scale of 1 inch 100,000 miles,
then the closest star to our solar system in
this model would be another 4,000 miles distant!
The closest star that we know of is Alpha
Centauri.
