Background Information
  • Automotive industry is too dependant on
    non-renewable resources that continue to
    deteriorate the environment
  • Columbia University plans to lessen its
environmental footprint lessen C02 emissions and
other greenhouse gases by 30 within the next 10
    years
  • The available waste vegetable oil (WVO) can be
    put to better use
  • Switching to Biodiesel is feasible and easy

3
The Basics of Biodiesel
  • A cheaper, more eco-friendly fuel alternative
  • Easily processed from animal fat or waste
    vegetable oil
  • Can be mixed with conventional diesel

4
Problem Statement
  • Waste oil is not recycled in an efficient manner
  • Columbia pays for removal of oil
  • OBJECTIVES
  • To find a way to efficiently recycle the waste
oil produced by John Jay Hall to power Columbias
    Lamont Shuttle Bus
  • To implement and perfect the Columbia Spring 2007
    Teams ideas

5
Considerations for Design
  • Storage Temperature Regulation
  • Filtering of WVO
  • Capacity for Storage
  • Byproduct Waste
  • Energy Consumption
  • Fueling of the Bus
  • Funding
  • Manual Labor

6
Intended Design
  • BioPro 190
  • Electrically Powered Uses standard 120 V AC power
  • 21x21x67 inches
  • Biodiesel and Glycerin Byproducts
  • 50 gallons of WVO yields 50 gallons of pure
    biodiesel

7
Alternative Solutions
BioPro380
The Freedom Fueler
Home built reactors

Final Expectations
  • Overall, we expect to provide the client with a
feasible method to use the waste vegetable oil
from the John Jay Dining Hall to fuel the Lamont
Shuttle Bus Service in order to reduce Columbia
    Universitys environmental footprint.
  • More specifically we intend to focus on the
disposal or reuse of the waste glycerin through
    composting systems.
  • Ways to utilize the waste methanol for reuse in
    the biodiesel production
  • An efficient manner in which the biodiesel is
transported from the reactor to the fueling
    station
  • Temperature regularities of the biodiesel storage
