    schools, 1 alternative school.

Colleges and Schools and the SC Department of
    Education.

3
District Mission
  • As Champions for Children, Lexington School
District 2 will provide quality education
opportunities that will enable all students to
    achieve success.

4
A Professional Substitute
  • Through honesty and integrity, a professional
substitute can help the schools and the district
meet goals and provide a quality education.

5
Dependability
  • Be available when you are called.
  • Be willing.
  • Be flexible toward different schools and grade
    levels.
  • If you are not available on the day you are
called, just say Please call me next time.

6
Declining too Often
  • If you decline too often, you may stop receiving
    calls.
  • If you accept a long-term assignment, contact the
district substitute coordinator at 939-3140 to
have your name taken off the active list.

7
Appropriate Language
  • Always address students, staff, faculty and
    parents with respect.
  • Never use sarcastic or disrespectful terminology
    or phrases.
  • Never use profanity.
  • Never embarrass a student in front of others.
  • Students should address you as Mrs., Mr., Ms., or
    Miss.

8
Be Positive
  • Avoid speaking negatively about students,
    teachers, classes or schools.
  • It can be damaging and may result in fewer
    opportunities to substitute.
  • Think positively.
  • Act confidently.
  • Speak with assurance and authority.
  • Be able to laugh at your own mistakes.

9
Appropriate Dress
  • Casual clothes set casual expectations.
  • Dressing professionally lets students know that
you are serious about their education and your
    work.

10
Always Ask
  • When called by a school to sub, ask for examples
    of proper teacher attire.
  • When you are called, be sure to ask if there are
special activities or events scheduled for the
    date you will substitute.

11
Be Prompt
  • Arrive at school as early as you can.
  • Always go to the school office before going to
    the classroom.
  • Set your watch by the school time.
  • Meet students at the classroom door.

12
Be Organized
  • Take time to organize and plan your activities to
save time and do an outstanding job.
  • Do not clutter the regular teachers desk.
  • Leave the classroom neater than you found it.

13
Your School Bag
  • Pack a few supplies to make a quick start paper
clips, name tags, marking pens, a whistle,
    antiseptic hand wipes, Kleenex, calendar,
emergency lesson plans, activities, ice breakers,
    etc.

14
Be Responsible
  • Follow and finish the directions given by the
    regular teacher and/or principal.
  • In the majority of situations, lesson plans will
be provided, and it is expected that substitutes
will follow the planned lessons as prescribed.

15
Be Accurate
  • Keep and leave accurate records for the teacher
    and principal.
  • When you check-in at the school office, ask for
any information that will make your day more
successful and give you and the students the best
    chance for a successful day.

16
Keep a Record
  • Keep a personal calendar of your work days.
  • Note specific dates and schools.
  • Record the names and positions of the persons for
    whom you substitute.
  • Should you need to contact the Director of
Payroll, this information will be important to
    have.

17
Be Discreet
  • Teachers often have access to confidential
    information regarding students, families, staff
    and faculty.
  • Do not share any information learned in the
school with anyone outside the school system.
  • Treat all information confidentially.

18
Good Questions to Ask
  • Where are the lesson plans located?
  • Where is the emergency plan kept?
  • What is the daily schedule?
  • What are the names of some neighboring teachers?
  • What are the names of some reliable students?
  • What are my responsibilities beyond this class?

19
The Teacher
  • You are the teacher for the day.
  • So, basically, look and act like a teacher!

20
An Important Role
  • Substitutes play an important role and are very
much appreciated in our school district.
  • It is very important to establish a positive
reputation which will ensure a good relationship
between you and the principals who are in need of
    your services.
