    for you?

Limits Controls
To know what the rules are
Who is in charge
To know they are safe

Suggested Discipline strategies
6
Love Respect
Children learn what is modeled by their parents
Honesty Integrity Manners Kindness
What one generation allows in moderation, the
next generation takes to excess.
7
Love Respect
Negative attention is better than no attention
  • Children use wrong behavior to get what they want
  • Pick your battles, dont deal with all the issues
    at once.
  • Select the most important issue and get it
    settled.
  • You MUST WIN any battle you enter into with the
    child!

8
Clear Expectations
Children need to know the rules!
They want to know what they really are Not what
you say they are And will test the limits to find
out What the rule really is.
The rules must be firm!
9
Clear Expectations
They need to know there are consequences for
Obedience (Rewards) Disobedience (Discipline)
10
Clear Expectations
Consistency is crucial
Parents must work together and be in agreement
on one set of house rules
11
Consequences
Natural Consequences
Allow the child to live with the natural result
of their decision
Logical Consequences
Decide on an action that fits what the child did
wrong.
12
Consequences
Behavior Modification

something they may or may not want.

Temper Tantrums
Causes of temper tantrums
Hunger
Fatigue
Manipulation
Changed Schedule
Emotional Overload
16
Temper Tantrums
Temper Tantrum strategies
Try to find out and address the cause of the
tantrum
Learn your child's needs as they develop. Dont
wait for the explosion!
17
Temper Tantrums
Hunger
Many children respond quickly dramatically To
their blood sugar levels. If a child throws fits
when hungry feed him/her more often. Talk with
them about their hunger. Believe them when they
say they are hungry.
18
Temper Tantrums
Fatigue
If a child is short on sleep Deal with the
problem of sleep DO NOT punish a child for being
to tired. (Teenagers exempt if it is their own
fault)
19
Temper Tantrums
Schedule Changes
We are creatures of habit, the younger the child,
the less disruption it takes to have dramatic
effect. Try to maintain a stable schedule. Keep
disruptions to a minimum.
20
Temper Tantrums
Emotional Overload
Think about what is going on in the childs
life. Recognize and understand emotional
overload, DO NOT DISCIPLINE For emotions that
have been overloaded
21
Temper Tantrums
Manipulation
Make sure is not one of the previous reasons
first. Discipline For Manipulation
