Save/Save As? Whats the difference?
OK, so you already knew this!
SAVE
Saves your changes onto the SAME document, in
the same place. Do this often to insure all your
changes are being saved.
SAVE AS
Saves your changes with a new name of
your choice. Useful for saving a new copy in
another location or saving another version of the
document.

What is a profile anyway?
What do you mean recreate my profile?
Every user on Mikenet has a profile, either
roaming or local. This profile includes all of
your customized, user-specific settings
  • Customized desktop- background, etc.
  • Drive Mappings
  • Network Printers
  • Internet Explorer Favorites and History
  • Customized START Menu
  • Preferred FILE/SAVE locations

New Information!
We use ROAMING PROFILES in Mikenet labs and
classrooms so that your custom settings travel
with you when you move from computer to computer
on campus
This profile is stored in the Documents and
Settings\username folder on a network drive and
on your local computer. When you log on/log off
this profile, with the changes you have made,
writes up/down from the local PC to the network
drive.
19
TABLET USERS have a different situation
YOU have a LOCAL profile.
It does NOT write up down to the network
Thats why what you see on classroom and lab
computers is NOT what you see on your Tablet!
LOCAL Profile
ROAMING Profile
New Information!
20
Problems can occur if this process is interrupted
at logon/logoff
Your profile can be DAMAGED!
21
Whats the worst that could happenif my profile
is DAMAGED?
Ask yourself- Would it matter if
  • ALL of the customized settings youcreated were
gone and had to be setup again?
  • ANY files stored on the DESKTOPwere gone forever?

22
NEVER SAVE ONTO THE DESKTOP! (Roaming or Local
Profile)
  • A desktop at risk
  • Lots of original files and folders
  • Zip files and executables
  • Almost no shortcuts

At best, this desktop increases logon/logoff
times At worst, these files could be lost
forever!
23
Can I prevent profile problems?
Yes! Remember
Smartboardsare WAY cool!
  • Save in the right location
  • Preferred Choice- O or Z DRIVE
  • NOT C\Documents and Settings\username\...
  • NEVER shut PC off during logon/logoff
  • Change Default SAVE locations if possible
  • DO NOT save onto Desktop
  • (use shortcuts) ?

Technology at SMCJean Marie 279
24
BACKUP YOUR FILES Using Windows Explorer-
Right-Click on MY COMPUTER Choose EXPLORE
25
In Conclusion
  • SAVE properly and take care of your profile,
  • Save to Network Drive (O/ Z) or removable media
  • Change your default SAVE locations
  • Never save to Desktop (use Shortcuts
    instead)(this includes TABLET users!)
  • Never power off a computer when logging on/off
  • BACK UP regularly (especially if saving locally)
  • Use sub-folders for easy access
  • Use Windows Explorer to help back up
  • Use removable media to back up- CDs, DVDs, etc.
