Title: HP 8656B RF Signal Generator

1
HP 8656B RF Signal Generator
Quick Reference Guide
Main Controls
The first three buttons listed below are the most
often used. Numeric values are entered with the
numeric keypad followed by pressing a units key.
  • FREQ Hit this key, followed by entering a
frequency value on the numeric keypad and units
(e.g. MHz) on the units buttons to the right of
    the keypad.
  • AMPTD Allows entry of an amplitude level.
  • RF ON/OFF Turns the output signal on and off.
Current state is shown in the display below the
    amplitude box.
  • AM/FM These buttons can be used to turn on and
off modulation. To turn on modulation, press one
of these buttons, followed by the INT 1kHz or INT
400 Hz buttons. Then enter a frequency deviation
or amplitude depth percent value via the keypad
To turn off modulation, hit AM or FM followed by
the OFF button (below the INT 1 kHz key).
  • MOD Input/Output Input connector for externally
applied modulating waveform. To use, hit AM or
FM button, followed by EXT and entry of a
deviation or modulation depth. Apply approx 1V
peak signal to the MOD Input/Output connector and
adjust the external level until neither the HI
EXT or LO EXT lights are lit.
  • INCR SET Allows varying the frequency or
amplitude in user-defined steps to manually sweep
through a range near the current setting. To
use, hit INCR SET followed by entering a
frequency or dB value. Then use the up/down
    buttons below FREQ or AMPTD.

Overview
  • The HP 8656B is an RF signal generator covering
    100 kHz through 990 MHz.
  • It has synthesized tuning with frequency
    resolution to 10 Hz.
  • The RF output level can be set from -127 dBm to
13 dBm with a resolution of 0.1 dB.
  • Basic AM and FM modulation is provided with a
built-in modulation source producing sinewaves at
either 1 kHz or 400 Hz.
  • Alternatively, modulating waveforms can be input
externally with a response bandwidth from 20 Hz
to 50 kHz (DC to 50 kHz with DC-coupled FM mode
    selected).
