Recent Developments within the Mobile Phone
Partnership Initiative

• Manufacturers very much welcome the increased
  involvements of carriers within the MPPI
• Manufacturers are encouraged by the progress made
  in all of the working groups over the last 6
  months
• The work of the MPPI is reaching a key stage
• Discussion on potential pilot projects
• In developing countries, and
• On refurbishment processes supplying to
  developing countries
• Progress in all working groups
• Projects 1.1 (refurbishment) 3.1 (Recycling) and
  4.1 (Design and training) are in final stages
• Project 2.1 (collection transboundary movement)
  has made significant progress

  mobile phones accessories, are delivering
  low-risk products into developing markets that
  meet acceptable product safety, quality,

  recovery systems that ascribe to the Guidelines
  developed under the MPPI
• Benefits to Reprocessors (Recyclers
  Refurbishers)
• Confidence that they are working to Guidelines
  that assure their customers of a high calibre
  service/product
• A source of information on good practise with
  respect to regulations and the state-of-the-art
  in the areas of re-furbishment, recycling and
  associated shipment

• Benefits to the consumer
• Confidence (esp. for those in developing
  countries) that the refurbisher who indirectly
  provided their new refurbished/second-hand
  product is taking their Producer Responsibility
  obligations seriously
• Confidence that when they wish to dispose of
  their used mobile accessories, that an
  appropriate system is in place to ensure the safe
  end-of-life management of their unwanted product.

• The MPPI has reached a very exciting stage
• Close to completion of Guidelines
• Initial discussions on potential Pilot Projects
• Seen increased interest by many stakeholders
• As we move further towards Pilot project, we hope
  and encourage other stakeholders will become more
  involved in the initiative.
