Greenhouse Gas Emission
  • Brazil is in top ten for GHG emissions.
  • Deforestation (burning) accounts for most GHG
    emission.
  • Little fossil fuel burning. Most energy comes
from hydroelectric power, alcohol, and charcoal.

Effects of Weather Changes
  • Northern Brazil- due to drought, a 16 decrease
    in agriculture production occurred.
  • 14 million people effected.
  • 300 increase in food prices.
  • Agriculture unemployment soared.
  • Drought assistance was given to 2.8 million
    people.

Effects of Weather Changes cont
  • Southern Brazil- Town of Santa Caterina lost 924
    million in crop damage.
  • Rainfall increased by 70-100.
  • Several hundred thousand people homeless.
  • 25 million tons of topsoil was lost.
  • Combined drought and floods caused export crops
to decrease by 875 million, further increasing
    deficit.

Global Warming and Health
  • Due to crop loss and increased air pollution,
    malnutrition rates have increased, especially
    with children.
  • Children have become more susceptible to
diarrheal and respiratory diseases as well as
    measles, T.B., and malaria.
  • Nascimento, Modolo, Carvalho (2004) An increase
in child hospital admissions due to increased
levels of sulfur dioxide and particulate
    material.
