2Background
- PAIAF is a framework for the assessment of
development impacts on those aspects of the
physical environment that support physical
activity as part the land use planning and
development process. - Link public health and planning at the local
government level. - Conscious action of balancing the trade-offs
between impacts and benefits of development
outcomes with the health of individuals.
3Town planning blamed for obesity
Poor town planning which limits opportunities for
children to take exercise has been blamed for
fuelling an increase in obesity. Leading US
paediatrician Professor Richard Jackson called
for a rethink in the way towns and cities are
developed. He said living in a walkable
neighbourhood helped people keep off an average
of seven pounds (3.17kg). Professor Jackson made
his comments at a lecture at London's Institute
of Child Health.

Design Element
8Elements of the PAIAF
- Divided into the two categories of Design
Criteria for Local Areas and Places, which
reflects their application in the planning
process. - The principle difference between the two is in
the scale (spatial area) and complexity (range of
uses) of the development and associated planning
and assessment processes. - 4 Star Development
9PAIAF Themes
- 57 themes addressed in PAIAF.
- end of trip facilities, bicycle parking,
pedestrian access and mobility, public and
private open space, shade structures,
permeability of access ways, availability of age
appropriate physical activity facilities,
community safety, etc.
10Future Goals
- Planners to place conditions of approval on DAPs
that are supportive of PA. - Accreditation system for developers that will
engage and educate them about the best approach
to designing environments that are supportive of
PA. - Integrate PAIAF into higher order policies within
the CoF. -
