4We need to step back and examine our profession
and the path we forge to determine whether our
practical objectives are in alignment with this
greater duty to society that goes beyond our work
in companies and organizations.
5Yes, we have roles in societies, in governments,
in companies. But what are we? Without
knowing, we remain in a rut, vulnerably guided by
those same entities we work for that may possibly
not have the same vision as us.

Each of these professions do things in order to
fulfill their core function, and this core
function or identity doesnt change over time or
place.
7Current Perceptions
The environmental manager is in essence a
salesperson, selling the advantage of his or her
product in a nonthreatening manner to line and
staff managers and, in turn, making the field
