• Blood Borne Pathogens Plan

Purpose

• The purpose of the Blood Borne Pathogens Exposure
  Plan of Lexington School District 2 is to
  eliminate or minimize employee occupational
  exposure and comply with OSHA Blood Borne
  Pathogens Standard, 29 CFR 1910.1030.

Who is at risk of being exposed to blood borne
pathogens?

• Children are not immune to infections.
• Teachers and staff interacting with students may
  be more likely to come in contact with blood,
  bodily fluids or other potentially infectious
  materials.

Transmitted Through Body Fluids

• Many diseases are transmitted through blood borne
  pathogens
• HIV destroys the bodys immune system.
• Hepatitis B (JBV)
• Hepatitis C (HCV) liver inflammation

How are pathogens transmitted?

• There are many opportunities for pathogens to be
  transmitted
• blood, semen, mucus, vaginal secretions and
  other human secretions.

Pathogens Enter the Body Directly and Indirectly

• Open cuts
• Skin abrasions
• Mucus membranes (the nose)
• Skin irritations
• Acne

Dangerous Objects

• Scissors
• Art supplies
• Rulers
• Staple removers
• Sports equipment
• Eating utensils
• Shop equipment

Exposure Control Is the Key

• Reduce the risk of exposure.
• Always use personal protective gear such as
  gloves and masks.
• If exposed, immediately wash the exposed area
  thoroughly with antibacterial soap.
• If soap and water are not readily available, use
  antiseptic wipes and wash later.

Be Preventive Minded

• To be safe and keep others safe, always wear
  personal protective equipment and take preventive
  measures.
• HIV, HBV or HCV can only be detected by blood
  tests.
• To date there is no cure for HIV.
• There is a vaccine for HBV.

Everyone

• Everyone is a potential carrier of blood borne
  pathogens.
• And, everyone must recognize the dangers and take
  precautions.

Further Precautions

• Carry disposable plastic gloves in your school
  bag.
• Pack antiseptic towels in your school bag.
• If you have been exposed to bodily fluids, do not
  handle contact lens, apply make up or brush your
  teeth until you have washed with antiseptic soap
  and water.
• Never store food or drinks anywhere near
  hazardous materials (body fluids).

Likelihood of Exposure

• No one is immune.
• Some students and adults are more vulnerable.
• Therefore, some jobs have a greater likelihood of
  exposure.

• School health nurses, CPR/First Aid Responders
• Special education teachers/teacher assistants
• Bus drivers for handicapped students
• Elementary school teachers/teacher assistants
• Coaches, trainers, PE teachers
• Principals, assistant principals, student
  services coordinators
• Secretaries
• Custodians

The Best Protection

• Always use protective equipment that is in good
  condition.
• Never share gloves or face masks.
• Never use equipment that has been contaminated by
  hazardous materials or body fluids.
• Never re-use protective equipment.
• Immediately wash surfaces and skin after exposure.

Disposal

• Custodial staff normally disposes of hazardous
  materials.
• If they are not available, handle it with
  protective gloves or tools.
• Use proper containers, such as bio hazard
  containers for needles, scissors, gloves, or
  clothing.

Dont Panic

• Wash exposed area with soap and water
  immediately.
• If eyes are exposed, flush them with warm water.
• Exposure does not automatically mean infection or
  disease.

Report It

• Immediately report exposure to school
  administrators.
• Make your own personal notes of the date and
  extent of exposure.

• Maintaining a safe, healthy workplace is
  everyones responsibility.
