8The Need for Improvement in the West Midlands
The West Midlands is under-doctored
9National and Local Services for EAPC
- National level
- At least 100 new general practices in 25 of
PCTs with the poorest provision - And one new GP led health centre in each PCT in
easily accessible locations - Equitable Access in Primary Medical Care
Programme will play a significant role in
achieving more personalised care set out by Lord
Darzi
- Local level
- 22 new GP Practices located in deprived areas of
NHS West Midlands - 17 new health centres in accessible locations,
open 7 days a week, 12 hours a day - Improved access for all members of the
population - Tenders advertised by NHS West Midlands
10Principles
- New capacity not expansion or replacement of
existing surgeries or health centres. Though PCTs
may use funding for services that were already in
planning stage at the time of Our NHS, Our Future
- Investment is for additional capacity (i.e. extra
GPs, nurses and support staff)
- New and innovative services, not necessarily new
buildings or facilities. PCTs may wish to utilise
LIFT or other community developments.
- Every health centre will have GP services at its
core. Anyone (regardless of where they are
registered) should be able to get bookable GP
appointments or walk-services
- All services commissioned following an open and
transparent tendering process, most likely using
APMS as the contracting vehicle.
- PCTs to work out potential integration with other
services (pharmacy, diagnostic, social care)
