Biography

• Born and raised in New York City, Arbus came from
  a wealthy Jewish family
• She fell in love with Allan Arbus at 14, and they
  eloped when she was 18.
• She and her husband separated in 1959 after she
  successfully ran a fashion photography studio and
  learned about photography from Lisette Model.
• She had two daughters, photographer Amy Arbus and
  art director Doon Arbus.
• She worked as a photojournalist after her
  divorce.
• She took her own life at 1971, when she was only
  48.

Style Technique

• Arbus made only black white photographs, and
  all of her pictures were simple and
  uncomplicated.
• She photographed subjects that would normally be
  labeled as strange or freaks.
• Her photography is famous because even though her
  concept was simple, it gave an interesting,
  almost compassionate view of these people who
  would normally be outcasts.

What I Thought

• I found the artists work to be striking.
  Although the photos seem very simple, their
  subjects are unique and interesting. By keeping
  the photos black white with little clutter or
  distraction, she captures the essence of her
  subjects in a plain and truthful manner.
