Strong suggestion For each of the groups of
questions, keep the questions together and ask
them as though they are one question with many
parts. Also just assume that a yes/no question
should be followed by some questions such as how
and why in order to spark discussion.
1) In the opening scene, what do the mountains
say to you about nature and creation? 2) Stop
movie after the flashback to Gandalfs death is
complete and we see Frodo wake up startled. Do
you think Gandalfs fingers slipped or did he let
go of the cliff on purpose? If so, for what
reason did he let go? Would you have let go or
fought to live if in Gandalfs position? Resume
movie. 3) What do you hold onto as a memory of a
place or time you once knew as with Sams
spices? 4) Stop the movie as Sam says Mordor,
the one place in Middle Earth we dont want to
see any closer. Its the one place were trying
to get to. Its just where we cant get to. Do
you ever have times where you know you have to do
something or go somewhere but you would really
rather not? Explain. Resume movie. 5) After
seeing our introduction to Gollum/Smeagol and his
desire for the Ring, what does it continue to
suggest about the Ring and what it does to those
around it? 6) Reflecting back to Fellowship of
the Rings, Frodo remembers Gandalf telling him
I believe he (Gollum) has some part to play in
this, for good or for ill. Do you think Gandalf
will end up being right? How?

Gollum, Sam and Frodo in the Dead Marshes we see
the three of them briefly each turn away from
each other. What could this be foreshadowing? 12)
What does it say about Gollum and his reaction
to pure good things like Elvish rope and Hobbit
food?
