1
BROWSER WARS
2
What is a Browser
  • Short for Web browser, a software application
used to locate and display Web pages. The two
most popular browsers are Netscape Navigator and
Microsoft Internet Explorer. Both of these are
graphical browsers, which means that they can
display graphics as well as text. In addition,
most modern browsers can present multimedia
information, including sound and video, though
they require plug-ins for some formats.

3
The New Additions
  • Opera Browser
  • Norwegian based software company
  • Existed for over decade
  • Market share at 1.3
  • Over 10 million users (up from 250,000 in 2000)

4
The New Additions (cont)
  • Mozilla
  • Firefox Browser
  • Market share at 4.6
  • Has been downloaded 9.5 million times since its
    Nov. 5 release

5
Advantages of Mozilla
  • It is free to download at any time
  • Computer code is freely distributed so that
volunteer computer programmers from around the
world can make improvements. (an open-source
    program)
  • Widely believed to be far safer than Internet
    Explorer

6
Advantages of Opera
  • Has multiple computer operating systems and the
ability to operate in a modified form on mobile
    devices and TV set boxes
  • Newest Version has voice recognition, automatic
web-page width resizing, and revamped support for
Really Simple Syndication (a web clipping
    service)

7
Disadvantages
  • Mozillas Firefox browser is composed of an
open-source code, leaving it vulnerable to
    hackers/programmers infecting it with viruses
  • Operas browser is not free

8
Future of Mozilla/Opera
  • Both companies plan to expand operations into
    neighboring businesses
  • Their browsers will be used on mobile phones,
    handheld computers, and TV screens
  • Japanese mobile phone operator KDDI already uses
    Opera on its handsets
