Food of Ancient India
  • The earliest Indians ate mainly lentils, rice and
wheat. They also occasionally ate cows, pigs,
sheep, goats and chicken. Some of the wheat
produced was made into stews or soups and some
    made into flatbreads called chapatis.

Shelter in Ancient India
  • The biggest earliest homes in India were made out
of mud-brick and baked brick. Most of the
    buildings were ordinary houses.

4
Physical Environment
  • Most of the time, the weather in ancient India
was hot and dry except each May a monsoon would
come and it would rain buckets of water. The
monsoon would go on for about a month.

People of Ancient India
  • People in ancient India were divided into five
groups, or castes. Actually, there were only
four groups and the lowest were the untouchables
and below them were the slaves. The order went
    slaves, untouchables, Shudras, Viashyas (farmers
or traders), Kshatriyas and the highest group the
    Brahmans.

Clothing of Ancient India
  • The women of ancient India wore a very long piece
of cloth that they wrapped around themselves
called a sari. Most were made out of cotton and
    wealthier women had silk ones.
  • The men of ancient India also wore a long piece
of cloth called a dhoti which they wrapped around
their legs. The dhoti was usually white, but they
    were shorter than the sari.

7
Architecture of Ancient India
  • There are probably a lot of temples in ancient
India, but the largest Hindu temple complex in
the world is the Akshardham temple. It is 356
FEET LONG, 315 FEET WIDE and 141 FEET HIGH!!!!
The Akshardham temple is in South Delhi.

8
Recreation/sports of Ancient India
  • In Ancient India, they did not have the games
that we have today. Instead they had an idea to
throw the knucklebones of pigs or sheep to play a
game sort of like jacks or to tell the future.
Indian people played of board games like snakes
and ladders and chess which they got from China.

9
Education in Ancient India
  • When Buddhism spread in India, men and women both
had equal rights to teaching and learning. They
    learned about theology, religion, philosophy,
    fine arts, painting, architecture, mathematics,
    medicine, and astronomy.

10
Religious Beliefs
  • India has been an important part of three major
world religions Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam.
Buddhism began in India and spread to different
parts of Asia. Islam started in West Asia and
came to India and the origins of Hinduism are
    still uncertain.
