Parts of a Sentence

A Sentence
  • A sentence contains a DO word.
  • Someone has to DO whatever the DO word is.
  • That someone is called the subject.
  • Therefore, a sentence contains a DO WORD and a
    subject.
  • The sentence must also make a complete statement.

Subject
  • To find the subject of the sentence, first find
    the DO Word and ask the following question
  • Who?/What? verb the subject
  • He sailed his little tugboat across the pond.

False Subjects
  • The words there and here cannot be subjects
  • They are expletives, not subjects.
  • There (is, are) bullets on the ground.
  • Here (is, are) a telegram for you from Opa

Compound Subjects
  • Sentences may have more than one subject.
  • The man and his dog went for a walk around the
    block.

Subjects in Questions
  • Questions usually begin with a verb, a helping
    verb, or an interrogative pronoun.
  • Whom did you see at the political rally?
  • (Is, Are) there any programs left from tonights
    game?

The Understood Subject
  • In a request or a command, the subject is usually
    not stated.
  • Hand me that crescent wrench in the toolbox.
  • The voice over the loudspeaker said, Gentlemen,
    start your engines.
