Title: Be the Change.

1
  • Be the Change.

2
Our Mission
  • HandsOn Santa Clarita provides support and
resources to build non-profit capacity and
connect local non profit organizations with
volunteers, groups, and businesses to meet the
    needs of the community

3
Why Volunteer?
  • Make A Difference in peoples lives
  • Many Organizations need volunteers just to
    operate
  • Give Back
  • Share your skills with others
  • Help form a stronger community
  • Meet new people, and make new friends
  • Have fun!
  • Helping others will help you too.

4
Helping others can Help You
  • The Benefits of Volunteering

5
Explore your interests
  • If you like animals, help at an animal shelter
  • If you like working with kids, get involved with
a summer camp or preschool program
  • If you like sports, play games with kids at the
    Boys and Girls Club
  • If you enjoy being outdoors, help clean up some
hiking trails, or at a local park
  • If you enjoy performing arts, explore volunteer
opportunities with a community theatre group

6
Learn About Possible Careers
  • If you think youd like the medical field,
volunteer at a hospital, a retirement or nursing
    home, or hospice
  • If youre interested in teaching help younger
    children with homework
  • If youre interested in a job at an office
someday, offer to help with filling, data entry,
or answering phones at a non profit organization.

7
Meet People You Wouldnt Normally Meet
  • You will meet other people with similar interests
    as you
  • If you miss your grandparents, adopt one at the
    local senior center
  • Make contacts which may help your career

8
Learn More
  • Learn about many issues (cultural, health,
    environmental, etc)
  • Learn leadership skills
  • Improve interpersonal/communication skills

9
Volunteer Activities look good
  • College Admissions Staff want to know who you are
as a person. They want to know more about you
than your high school grades and SAT scores
  • Potential Employers want to know if you show up
on time, can take direction, are responsible, and
work well with others. A good reference from an
agency youve volunteered with can help them
decide that youll be a good employee.

10
Build Skills
  • Add to your skill set and employers will
recognize the efforts you have made as a
    volunteer.
  • These skills could include written and verbal
communication skills, ability to work with others
(team player), ability to take direction and/or
lead others, motivation and dedication to get a
    job done and flexibility.

11
Learn to Manage Time
  • Employers realize that as a volunteer, you must
be able to prioritize your schedule so that you
have time to devote to activities that benefit
    others.

12
It shows character
  • Many employers know that offering your services
to others without pay requires a special kind of
person (someone who is willing to try something
new) and are willing to give that individual a
job over those who do not volunteer their time.

13
Personal development
  • Personal development, especially in such areas as
    self-fulfillment, self-confidence and self-esteem
often flourish in the midst of volunteering
experiences. As you are trained to do more tasks,
you become more skilled and feel better about
yourself. When you are confident and fulfilled,
it is apparent to everyone you meet. Yes, that
    includes employers.

14
Tips on Volunteering
  • Think about what causes and issues are important
    to you.
  • What skills would you like to offer?
  • Volunteering can be a way to learn something new
    or reach your goals.
  • Dont over commit your self
  • Non profits may need some information from you
    too.
  • Be on time and call ahead if you will not be able
    to make it
  • Invite your friends or family
  • Before collecting supplies or organizing a drive
always make sure that there is an organization
that will be able to accept those
    goods
