23International Outlook
- In the past 30
- years in the
- United States and internationally depression
rates are twice as high among women as among men,
according to a study entitled Depression and
gender, written by Frances M. Culbertson from
the University of Wisconsin. Other researches
estimate the rate to be as high as 31. (Klerman
and Weissman, 1989 Wetzel, 1994).
- A study from Belfast about womens health states
that the connection between social deprivation
and diseases strikes mainly women. Low salaries,
low occupational status and part-time employment
affect women more.
24National perspective
- Based on tests, the frequency of neurotic and
psychosomatic conditions requiring treatment is
around - 20-25
- In addition to this, the number of alcoholics is
estimated at 990,000, that of drug users at
150-200,000, and the number of successful
suicides is 4500-5000.
