  • Two Kinds of Teacher Expectations
  • Self-fulfilling prophecy
  • Teachers form low, inaccurate expectations of
students. Student ultimately live up to these
    expectations
  • Sustaining expectation effect
  • Teachers form an idea about students but do not
change ideas when students show improvements in
    performance.

Group Discussion How did our activity and the
movie clip relate to teacher expectations??
4
  • Sources of Expectation
  • Intelligence Test Scores
  • Gender
  • Permanent Record Files and Notes From Previous
    Teachers
  • Knowledge of Ethnic Background
  • Knowledge of Older Brothers and Sisters
  • Previous Achievement and Behavior of the Student
  • Students After School Activities
  • When student performance does not fit
expectations, a teacher may dismiss behavior that
    seems out of character.

  • Teacher Expectations and Student Achievement
  • Rosenthal and Jacobson experimented with giving
    teachers groundless expectations of their
students. This experiment had really no effects
    on students.
  • Alvidrez and Weinstein experimented with teachers
who came to their own conclusions about students.
  • Teachers judgments of student ability at age 4
predicted student grade-point average at age 18.

6
Teacher Behavior and Student Reaction
  • Instructional Strategies
  • Some teachers give too much information while
others do not leave enough leeway
  • Have students of differing abilities work
    together to form solutions
  • Teacher-Student Interactions
  • Generally teachers are more encouraging toward
    higher-achieving students
  • Avoid giving too much encouragement/coaching
toward higher-achieving students, and too little
    encouragement to lower-achieving students. Equal
amounts of encouragement will produce positive
    results.
