Title: AUTO LIABILITY

1
AUTO LIABILITY
  • HOW DOES IT WORK?

2
Agenda
  • Reporting
  • Coverage
  • Actual Cases
  • Safety Issues

3
What we hope you take away
  • Your duties
  • Our responsibilities
  • A better understanding of the partnership

4
How do we get claims?
  • The Network
  • 1-877-656-7475

5
Which claims should I report?
  • Any accident that occurs while doing your
    official duties.
  • It does not matter what vehicle you are driving.
  • It does not matter whose fault it is.

6
How long do I have?
  • All auto claims must be reported within 48 hours.
  • Call us from the scene
  • Supervisor can call
  • Insurance coordinator can call
  • But whomever is going to call, needs to do it
    within 48 hours.

7
What info do I need?
  • Description of the loss
  • Location of the loss
  • Police dept.
  • Other partys name, address phone number
  • Its all on the little yellow card.

8
Where do I get the information?
  • At the scene
  • It is the Drivers Responsibility to get the
    info.
  • Do Not Wait for the Police Report.

9
OOPS-I didnt get the name!
  • Now YOU have to get the police report.
  • Now YOU have to hear from us every few days.
  • Now YOU may have the 3rd party calling your work,
your home, your boss, your Governor.
  • It is Extremely Important and yet one-third of
all losses list the other driver as Unknown.

10
Whats the Big Deal?
  • It irritates the other party.
  • Leads to more injury claims.
  • Additional expense for downtime and rental.
  • Higher settlements.
  • Unprofessional/irresponsible.

11
Benefits of this system
  • Fastest reporting system in the industry.
  • Payment is made on 53 of all paid claims within
    6 days.
  • Gets claimants in touch with our office and away
    from yours.
  • But it doesnt work unless you call in the
    proper information.

12
Whos Covered?
  • State employees while performing their official
    duties
  • In state vehicles
  • In personal vehicles
  • In rental vehicles
  • Some Volunteers
  • Some students

13
Whos Not Covered?
  • Independent Contractors
  • Staffing agency employees
  • Any State employee in any vehicle while on
    personal business
  • a) Lunch
  • b) Store
  • c) Picking up the kids
  • d) Any personal activity

14
What if I have Permission?
  • Permission to drive a state vehicle does not give
    you coverage.
  • The purpose of the trip and the status of the
    driver are the keys.
  • We must be extremely careful in authorizing use
of a state vehicle. The effect on the driver,
the supervisor, and the agency could be
  • catastrophic!

15
Lets look at some claims.Mark down your answers.
  • A CSB employee is taking clients on an outing and
stops at the ATM to get money for her lunch.
  • She hits the ATM.
  • Covered?

16
More on that one.
  • What if the client is hurt from the shattering
    glass?
  • Covered?

17
Next Case.
  • A DOT employee drives his personal vehicle to
work, runs his routes and then is back in the
    office at noon.
  • Goes out for a sandwich and takes the state
    vehicle.
  • Covered?

18
More on that one
  • The DOT supervisor gives permission to drive the
state vehicle and asks the driver to pick up food
for several people in the office.
  • Covered?

19
Heres Another
  • A University employee is going to the store for
office supplies and the Dean asks that he stop by
the bank to cash her check.
  • Leaving the school he turns towards the bank and
    immediately hits a car.
  • Covered?

20
After that
  • In that same scenario, at the bank, he backs into
    a child.
  • Covered?

21
Did you say Give me one more?
  • The Director of your agency gets a rental Monday
night for a meeting first thing Tues. in
    Savannah.
  • Going home Monday, he stops at the dry cleaners
to pick up a suit for the meeting. While turning
into the parking lot, he hits an oncoming car.
  • Covered?

22
And then
  • He always picks up the kids from school and today
    he hits the crossing guard.
  • Covered?

23
What a day!
  • He offers to take the crossing guard to the ER
and, at a light, his rental vehicle is rear ended
    and pushed into another vehicle.
  • The Director, his child and the crossing guard
are seriously injured, as is the driver of the
    lead vehicle.
  • The vehicle behind him leaves the scene.
  • What in the world is covered here?

24
Answers
  • Nothing
  • Nada
  • Zippo
  • Zilch
  • Once you start doing personal business, no matter
what your reasoning, you are insuring yourself.

25
Whats the rule?
  • Convenience
  • vs
  • Necessity

26
But what if?
  • When in doubt, ask yourself Is this specific act
    part of my official duties?
  • If notDONT DO IT

27
Three words from the Governor
  • Safety
  • Responsibility
  • Accountability

28
Report My Driving
  • This is a free program and yet every agency is
    not on board.
  • Its not a big stretch from Report My Driving? to
    Hows My Driving Record?
  • And from Hows My Driving Record? to Hows My
Driving Record Going To Effect My Employment With
    The State Of Georgia?

29
Help is on the way
  • While we are holding all state employees up to a
higher standard, we are going to help them and
the agencies with more and better training and
    training tools.
  • 30 of all state accidents involve hitting a
    fixed object.
  • These are completely preventable and that is our
    first goal.
  • Understand the Partnership-thats Loss Control.
