Guidelines for our project
  • The main concept we have based our work on is the
concept that no particular story line or history
should be implied by the configuration of the
exhibition room(s) one should be able to make
up ones own mind about what life was for the
    Vikings.

b. We try to achieve a) by improving and
balancing the flow of the exhibition by moving
and removing objects. Our aim when doing this has
been to decrease the differences in integration
between the spaces. We have not taken into
account possible loss of information in this
process.
c. We are mostly concerned with the configuration
of objects not what they actually are or what
information they carry (with some exceptions).
  • Some premises for our space syntax
    analysis
  • Spaces are not usually cut off by solid walls etc
even though one might be able to see past an
object (a showcase for example), we still
consider it to cut off a space.

b. Places where you can go but dont, because
there is nothing to see, are not considered
spaces.

Problems with the mid room
When studying how people were moving in the
center room we discovered that the room was badly
balanced. This works against the concept of free
movement, so we focused on solving this problem.
4
1. Axial map of basic configuration
The red lines are the axial map of the original
configuration. An axis is defined as the longest
straight line that is possible to travel by foot
from a given point.
5
1. Graph of basic configuration
Graph 1
A graph can be created from the axial map where
axes/spaces are represented as vertices and
junctions as edges.
6
1. Integration in basic configuration
Integration 1
The integration values can be represented with
lines of different thickness - the ticker the
more integrated.

changes balanced the mid room, but the
integration is still not quite satisfying.

other center objects.

Integration 3
Open up a space straight through the exhibition
by removing the horse, dog and boat and moving
other center objects. Comment The center path is
way to integrated and would probably take away
attention from other spaces.

4. Separate spaces in the center
Axial map 4
Closing up spaces in the center and blocking the
center path by placing the showcases close
together. And hereby creating a separate room.

Comment The third room is too isolated from the
rest.

throughout the exhibition with a slight emphasis
on the mid room.
