• An Extension demonstration project in the
  Republican River Basin showed that a water miser
  strategy used 31 percent less irrigation water
  while reducing corn yields only 3 percent.
  Overall estimated knowledge gained in 2006
  resulted in changes in practice saving 2.4
  million.

• Research at the High Plains Agricultural
  Laboratory near Sidney has shown chickpeas, or
  garbanzo beans, are a viable alternative crop for
  the Panhandle. Next year garbanzo beans are
  expected to add approximately 2.4 million to the
  Panhandle economy. Birdseed is another
  alternative crop.

  Resources (CASNR) historically averages over 70
  percent of its graduates taking their first jobs
  out of college in Nebraska, a brain gain for the
  state.
