Do you know this famous non-traditional student?
St. Ignatius of Loyola As a 30 year old man,
Ignatius was inspired to seek an education at the
University of Paris after reading The Life of
Christ and Lives of the Saints while recuperating
from war wounds. While he was a student, he
formed the Jesuit order, whose mission is to
seek the greater glory of God and the good of
humanity.

Do you know this famous non-traditional student?
Valentina Tereshkova You may not recognize her,
but this Russian cosmonaut has the distinction of
being the first woman in space. Tereshkova only
received a formal education from the ages of
10-16, as she worked to provide for her family.
After volunteering for space flight, she
graduated from the Zhuykosky Air Force
Engineering Academy.

Steven Spielberg After being turned down twice by
USCs Cinema School, Spielberg attended
California State University but dropped out after
three years.
Almost 35 years later, Spielberg completed his
degree through independent study courses, but put
on his cap and gown to walk with the Class of
2002 in the graduation ceremonies.

Do you know this famous non-traditional student?
Martin Sheen The star of West Wing and
Apocalypse Now deliberately flunked his
University of Dayton entrance exams to pursue his
dream of acting. Now age 66, Sheen enrolled this
fall at National University Galway in Ireland
where he is studying philosophy, English
literature and oceanography.

Bill Cosby After dropping out of high school to
join the Navy, Cosby completed his GED through
correspondence courses. He later enrolled at
Temple University, but put his education on hold
for acting. Cosby completed his bachelors
degree at Temple and received a masters and
doctorate of education from University of
Massachusetts in 1976 at the age of 39.

Shaquille ONeal Shaq left Louisiana State
University in 1992 after his junior year. He
completed his degree in December 2000 through a
combination of independent studies and attending
summer school in the basketball off-season. He
has since earned a masters degree and has plans
to return for a doctorate.
