The Beginning
  • On January 13, 1888 thirty-three men, who were
    explorers, convened to organize what would
    become one of the worlds largest scientific and
    educational organizations.

The First Magazine
  • October 18, 1988, nine months after the Society
    was founded, the first National Geographic
    Magazine was published.
  • The magazine was sent to 200 charter members.

Mission
  • The National Geographic Society has been
    organized to increase and diffuse geographic
    knowledge, and the publication of a Magazine has
    been determined upon one means of accomplishing
    these purposes. As it is not intended to be
    simply the organ of the Society, its pages will
    be open to all persons interested in geography,
    in the hope that it may become a channel of
    intercommunication, stimulate geographic
    investigation and prove an acceptable medium for
    the publication of results.

  • Subscription to the National Geographic Magazine
    granted membership into the National Geographic
    Society.

    Society of Magazine Editors for general editorial
    excellence for circulations over one million.
  • 2001 won Ellie for general excellence on
    line.
  • 2002 awarded Best of Festival by International
    Web Page Awards.

  • English language circulation of 7 million.
  • 25 local language editions with a circulation of
    2 million.

  • The entire collection of magazines, 112 years
    through 2000, is available on CD.
  • Online collection of magazines from July 1995 to
    the present.
