Bill Murray
  • Joined Lab in 1990
  • RA offer on Zeus but worked on DELPHI instead.
  • SSO position 1993
  • Some ATLAS involvement from then
  • Muon collider interest around 1998 MuScat
    experiment followed.
  • Band 3 around 2002
  • Some Mice involvement
  • DELPHI nearly all finished

Testing Tracker cables inside ATLAS
2
DELPHI (a LEP experiment)
  • After a long a distinguished past....
  • DELPHI is now in ruins
  • (This is the home of the oracle, the PYTHIA)
  • I worked on the silicon vertex detector
  • B/B0 lifetimes
  • B tagging
  • Higgs search

3
MuScat
  • Just a little experiment to check multiple
    scattering
  • 20 authors
  • It took longer than anticipated
  • Proposed in 1999, accepted for publication 2006.

As a small experiment, I worked on everything
squashing lithium targets, building detectors,
data-acquisition, beamline studies, but mostly on
Geant 4 simulations
4
Mice
  • Test of muon beam preparation ('cooling')
  • Used in Neutrino factory designs based
  • on muon decay to give neutrinos
  • Being built at RAL

Sole PPD member Small fraction of my time Doing
instrumentation and DAQ for beam-test at RAL in
November
5
ATLAS (A big experiment)
  • Worked on SCT for ten years
  • APV5 testbeam analysis
  • Module thermal optimisation
  • ABCD3T Q/A software responsible
  • Database of all ASICs used
  • Database updates for modules
  • With Jeff on hybrid QA
  • Now concentrating on analysis software
  • B-tagging
  • Higgs search top top Higgs channel

Other things at work
Other things at work
  • Lecturing at DURHAM on experimental methods (poor
theorists there have no experimentalists to talk
    to)
  • Coseners Forum meeting Annual get-together for
Particle Physics UK to discuss a topic
  • Thanks Jane Bruffell!
  • Schools lectures etc as 'SEA'
  • Ages 9-18 at various schools
  • PhyStat conference organizer Physics and
    Statistics
