Large-Scale Features
  • Maria Oceans of the Moon
  • - Extensive flat plains that resulted from the
    spread of lava during an earlier volcanic
    period of lunar evolution.
  • - The largest of them, Mare Imbrium, the Sea
    of Showers, is about 1100 km in diameter.
  • Highlands Terrae
  • - Regions that are elevated several
    kilometers above the maria.

Important Differences
  • The highlands are largely made of rocks rich in
    aluminum, making them light in color and lower in
    density.
  • The marias basaltic matter contains more iron,
    giving it a darker color and greater density.
  • Radioactive dating indicates ages of more than
    four billion years for highland rocks, and from
    3.2 to 3.9 billion years for those from the maria.

Cratering
  • Only Large-Scale features visible with the naked
    eye.
  • Using telescopes the discovery of bowl-shaped
    craters are seen.
  • These are caused by meteoric impact, causes high
    pressure that deform the surface.

  • Meteoroid strikes the surface, releasing a large
    amount of energy.
  • b,c) The pressure of the impact sends shock
    through the surface.
  • d) A blanket of ejected material called ejecta is
    thrown out.

    atmosphere.
  • The older highlands are more crated than the
    younger maria due to a drop in meteoric
    bombardment.

    surface.
