2A Partnership in Education
- The Miami Herald has been providing newspapers
for classroom use since 1970 when it established
a dedicated department called Newspaper in
Education or NIE. - The use of newspapers in the classroom promotes
literacy, learning and life long readership for
students, educators and parents. - The Miami Herald with 20 Pulitzer Prizes -
provides the best journalism in South Florida. - The Miami Herald is used by educators to
supplement lesson plans in all grade levels and
with many different subjects. - For lessons in Spanish, teachers turn to the
award winning el Nuevo Herald one of our
nations top Spanish language newspapers. - In addition to the newspaper, NIE also provides
additional resources and curriculum both in print
and online.
3Newspapers Going Green
- The Miami Herald has made dramatic improvements
to produce products with limited impact on the
environment. - Every Miami Herald and el Nuevo Herald is
produced using recycled newsprint. - We reduced the width of the newspaper saving
substantial newsprint. - Our new platemaking system used to create the
newspaper image eliminates the use of film in the
process and therefore silver - making production
much more environmentally friendly. - Even our facility has been upgraded with new
controls to help manage the electrical load and
upgraded plumbing that replaces inefficient water
faucets and better manages our hot water system. - We are embracing the shift from print to digital
by making our products available online with
added features. - In the Fall of 2008, The Miami Herald made the
leap to convert all NIE circulation copies from
print to digital newspapers.
4Newspapers A New Digital Age
- Today newspapers are making a dramatic shift to
online with various websites and digital
newspapers. - The Miami Herald converted NIE to 100 digital
newspapers putting newspapers in classrooms in
the most engaging format. - Todays reader and especially younger readers
seek out news and entertainment in digital format
using computers and cell phones. - New technologies for accessing news and
information are being embraced by the newspaper
industry. - McClatchy Newspapers, owner of The Miami Herald,
recently announced its new partnership with
Kindle a wireless reading device. - Newspapers are now well positioned to take
advantage developing technologies, like e-paper,
as they become available.
