    located at the southern tip of the Malay
    Peninsula. It lies 137 kilometres (85 mi) north
    of the equator, south of the Malaysian state of
    Johor and north of Indonesia's Riau Islands. At
    707.1 km2 (273.0 sq mi), Singapore is one of four
    remaining true city-states in the world. It is
    the smallest nation in Southeast Asia.

  • From a modest medical school founded in 1905, the
    National University of Singapore (NUS) has
    evolved into Singapore's global university with
    distinctive strengths in education and research
    and an entrepreneurial dimension. It has an
    enrolment of over 24,000 undergraduate and 7,000
    graduate students from 100 countries.

Program Overview
  • Summer School in Biodiversity
  • The program is designed for students with an
    interest in Biological Sciences and Biodiversity.
    Participants are enrolled in two courses one
    language courses ( one of which includes a
    week-long field school to the Tioman Islands,
    East Malaysia.

  • Participants take 2 classes 1. LSM4263 Field
    Studies in Biodiversity is the anchor module for
    the Summer Programme and incorporates a one week
    long field trip to Tioman Islands, East
    Malaysia.
  • 2. LAB1201 Bahasa Indonesia I or
  • LAC1201 Chinese I.

Program Details
  • LSM 4263 Field Studies in BiodiversityThe field
    course emphasizes teaching of multiple
    species-rich habitats with operational learning
    through assigning teams of students specific
    research goals.There will be 6 lectures (2 hours
    each) on the mission and various aspects of field
    work. There will also be up to 4 hands-on
    practical and/or tutorials (3 hours each) that
    will get the students ready (via local field
    trips, tutorials, discussions etc.).
  • LAB1201 Bahasa Indonesia IBahasa Indonesia is
    the national language which is akin to Malay,
    written in Roman script and based on European
    orthography. In all tourist destination areas
    English is the number one foreign language and is
    fairly well spoken and written, whereas some
    Dutch is still spoken and understood in the
    bigger cities.
  • LAC1201 Chinese I
  • This module is designed to provide an
    insight to Mandarin as a language and a window to
    Chinese culture in general. This is a beginners'
    course consisting of two components, i.e.,
    language conversation and Chinese characters
    learning.

Credit Transfer Information
  • The courses in this program have not been
    pre-approved for credit.
  • It is the responsibility of the student to speak
    with their faculty advisor about credit transfer.
  • Credit transfer is done by the Faculty and is not
    guaranteed.

Accommodation
  • Participants of the Summer Programme will be put
    up at Prince George's Park Residences (PGPR),
    located at Prince George's Park Road, off South
    Buona Vista road, and next King Edward VII Hall.
    This residential complex offers 2854 single
    rooms. The single rooms are grouped into
    clusters of 15 and offer its residents an
    apartment lifestyle. The 15 residents in each
    cluster are entrusted with collective
    responsibility for their shared facilities. Each
    cluster has its own kitchen, dining area, and
    bathroom facilities. The cluster lifestyle
    exposes students to independent living and also
    offers excellent opportunities for close
    interaction. 10 of the single rooms (Type A) are
    air-conditioned, with attached bathrooms, 20 of
    these are Type B, (single room with washbasin),
    and remaining 70 are standard Type C rooms.

  • Cost to the U of A 150.00 CND
  • Application fee
  • Cost to National University of Singapore
  • S5664.83 - S5704.83 (4251.30- 4281.47 CND)
    Includes registration fees, tuition, student pass
    application fee (cost varies depending on
    nationality of student), student activity fee,
    computer account fee, textbooks/course materials,
    field trip to Tioman Islands, day tour.
  • S 10- 20/Night (7.50- 15.00/Night CND)-
    Accommodation
  • Fees based on 2008 program and subject to
    change.

Application Process
  • Attend one of the mandatory group advising
    sessions for Summer Abroad in France.
  • Submit completed application to Education Abroad
    Program by March 16th, 2008.
  • If you are selected to participate in program you
    will then be required to complete the application
    to National University of Singapore.

Application Requirements
  • GPA requirements
  • 2.7 current
  • 2.5 cumulative
  • If you are in the Faculty of Science you must
    have completed 15 of course work at the time of
    application.
