School nursing- the first source of health care
for many children

• Provide First Aid
• Determines physical vs. mental needs
• Refer students for appropriate care
• Inform staff/community of health issues
• Encourage wellness
• Teach hygiene, nutrition and dental care
• Give medication as needed

School Nursing is more comprehensive.

• It is the ONLY source of health care for some.
• A resource for staff and parents

Screening Programs

• Vision screening, height and weight measuring,
  and nutrition training.
• Nurses introduce new screening tools (i.e. BMI)

Care

• There is acute care provided for illnesses and
  injuries.
• And there is the monitoring and management of the
  chronically ill children.

Asthma

• Asthma no longer keeps children home. Children
  are able to use medicines at home and school to
  keep them participating in the classroom.
  Nebulizers are used.

ADHD

• Nurses give support to teachers with students
  with ADHD. Medications are given as needed.

Diabetes

• Children with diabetes are monitored and kept
  under control with insulin shots.
• Much time is spent educating students how to care
  for themselves to ensure success in the classroom.

Advocate

• School nurses are advocates for children. Many
  phone calls are made for help from parents,
  physicians, social services.

We know that some children could not be
successful learners without the school nurse.

• School nurses are the heart of a school health
  program.
• School nurses help kids be all they can be!
