17Even in the insignificant moments, Lee continues
to show Atticus as compassionate and noble. When
Atticus visits the Robinsons after Toms death,
he sees Toms infant daughter Atticus went to
her, took off his hat, and offered her his
finger. She grabbed it and he eased her down the
steps. Then he gave her to Calpurnia.Atticuss
emotional strength is evident here. As upset as
he is, he is remaining focussed and strong for
those around him. Lifting your hat was a sign of
respect in those days and it is both unusual and
touching that Atticus tips his hat to this little
girl. The gesture of reaching out to her is also
kind. It is what a father would do and of
course, Atticus is sadly aware that she has no
father now. The fact that he holds out a finger
because his hand is too big for her
emphasises her tiny size and vulnerability.
