JPEG file formats

• JPEG (ISO/IEC 10918-1) was just a codestream
• JFIF became the de facto file format
• very basic
• ISO/IEC 10918-3 later defined an official file
  format, SPIFF
• more advanced but little used

• Part 1 (ISO/IEC 15444-1) defines a basic file
  format, JP2
• Also, implicitly, a JP family architecture
  based on QuickTime/MPEG-4
• Extensions in other Parts
• Part 2 (JPX) mainly multi-layer
• Part 3 (MJ2) motion
• Part 6 (JPM) document imaging (MRC)

JP family architecture

• A file is a sequence of boxes
• A box is
• a 4-byte length
• a 4-byte type identifier
• the contents
• The contents is a sequence of fields and/or
  boxes, as defined for each type

• XML need not be XHTML
• For example, Part 2 defines many specific
  metadata boxes, based on DIG35
• Not all metadata is in XML boxes
• For example, there is a specific IPR box
• Pandora is just one (novel) example
