Title: RAMpage on Iguana

1
RAMpage on Iguana
Robert Thomas Supervisor Philip Machanick
What is RAMpage?
What is Iguana?
More specifically called the RAMpage Memory
Hierarchy, it is the concept of shifting the
main memory (conventionally DRAM) up one level to
the largest level of cache (SRAM). DRAM then
becomes the primary paging device. This is shown
in the diagram below Machanick.
Developed by the University of New South Wales,
Iguana is an operating system built on the L4
Pistachio microkernel (more information at
www.l4ka.org). Iguana, though still largely
experimental, is designed for use in embedded
systems. It is a relatively simple OS, making
it easier to work with than many of the mainline
kernels (such as Linux).
Why is this useful?
  • Context switches on misses to SRAM
  • Dreamy memory power conservation
