Title: TomahawkPipe

Tomahawk-Pipe
  • Artifact Project

2
Tomahawk-Pipe
  • The tomahawk pipe was brought over by the
Europeans and was traded to the Iroquois men for
furs. It was used for presentation to important
chiefs in order to commemorate treaties and seal
    friendships.

3
What is it?
  • A resourceful combination of weapon smoking
pipe, invented by the Euro-Americans as a trading
object with the Natives. A piece of equipment
that every Euro-american and Native would have.

4
What was it used for?
  • It was used as a weapon and when out hunting it
was used as a tool. Iroquois men traded furs for
these tomahawks which were very popular.
Decorated examples were presented at treaty
signings as diplomatic gifts to Indian leaders,
who carried them as a sign of their prestige

5
What was it made of?
  • A light weight metal head ( 1 lbs or less) on
a wooden handle. The metals used were iron with a
welded steel bit, brass with steel bit, and solid
brass. More elaborate ones had fancy engravings
or silver inlaid blades and handles.

6
How did it Assist the Fur Trade?
  • They finally had a object that was a tool and
also a weapon. Since they had this, they could
just carry this one object around instead of the
two. It might of help the fur trade because there
was a big demand for pelts from the Iroquis and
the Tomahawk-Pipe was one the major things that
    was traded for these pelts.

7
Is it Still Used Today?
  • The tomahawk-pipe is not used today by anyone,
but you can probably find them at a local museum
and they are bought and sold through auctions in
person and over the world wide web. Some
Aboriginal people that were decendents of the
Iroquois Natives of the fur trade have pipe
    tomahawks of their own.
