INTERESTING FACTS

• Canadians own a total of eight million dogs and
  cats. According to Statistics Canada, there are
  approximately 3.5 million dogs and 4.5 million
  cats in the country (CBC).

• Pet owners spend nearly 3 billion annually on
  food, veterinary care and supplies for their
  companion animals almost 1 billion in Ontario
  alone. The pet industry also supports nearly
  40,000 jobs nationally (University of Guelph).

SIZE OF THE MARKET

• Large U.S. companies dominate the market at
  present ninety percent of the pet food sold in
  Canada originates from the U.S. (CBC).

• There are approximately 17 pet food manufacturers
  in Canada, the majority of which are based in
  Ontario (CBC).

• The following manufacturers are certified by the
  Canadian Veterinarian Medical Association (CVMA)
  Corey Feed Mills Ltd., Dads Products Co., Martin
  Pet Foods, PLB International Inc., Shur-Gain, and
  Menu Foods Ltd.

• Six large companies, holding a combined market
  share of nearly 70, dominate the world market
  for dog and cat food.

• These major players are Mars, Nestle, Iams,
  Hills Pet Nutrition, Del Monte, and Doane. The
  top 2 manufacturers, Nestle and Mars, account for
  50 of total dog and cat food sales(ITA).

• According to the American Society for the
  Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, annual costs to
  owners of cats and dogs can range anywhere from
  780 to 1500 U.S., of which the costs for food
  represent 120 to 350 (ASPCA).
