the tourism in Hong Kong by utilizing the
    resources of marine.

9
Marine
  • Hong Kong has only patchy coral growth
because of low coastal salinities, high
turbidities, and low winter temperatures. Coral
communities are mostly confined in the eastern
waters. Hong Kong has 85 hard coral species, at
least 59 of them can be found in Hoi Ha Wan,
which is comparable to the Caribbean Sea! And
there are 320 species of reef fishes that can be
    found in Hong Kong waters.
  • However, our marine habitat is continually being
    threatened by pollution, over-exploitation and
coastal development. For example, 6300 hectares
of our sea has been reclaimed since the 19th
century and more are being proposed for the
    future.

10
Intertidal
  • The long coastline of Hong Kong means that
intertidal habitats are varied. In sheltered
inlets where there is little or no wave action
and the shore is gently sloping, mangroves are
found. Most of Hong Kong's coastline does not
support mangroves and mudflats, with sandy, rocky
    and boulder shores being dominant.

Background information of Chinese White Dolphin
  • The Hong Kong SAR Government has deployed a
number of artificial reefs in Sha Chau/Lung Kwu
Chau Marine Park and a marine exclusion zone off
the airport to provide a trial artificial
    fisheries habitat to provide feeding
opportunities for dolphins as well as for
fisheries enhancement. It is hoped that this will
help increase dolphin food sources over the long
    term.
  • Studies indicate that there are about 180 Chinese
White Dolphins living in Hong Kong waters. More
than 80 have already been identified through
photographs. Researchers are still battling to
learn more information about these animals and a
conservation management plan must be drawn up to
    ensure their survival.

12
Background information of Chinese White Dolphin
  • Our dolphins are part of the Indo-Pacific
    Hump-backed Dolphin, Sousa chinensis, species
that ranges from South Africa to Australia and
throughout Southeast Asia. The vivid pink
colouring, exhibited by many of Hong Kong's
dolphins appears to make them a unique
    population.
  • To provide fuel to Chek Lap Kok Airport a
temporary Aviation Fuel Receiving Facility (AFRF)
was constructed at Sha Chau, an area that is also
frequently used by dolphins. To mitigate this
damage, the Hong Kong SAR Government
  • established a 12km2 Marine Park - also
  • known as a 'dolphin sanctuary' - around
  • Sha Chau and Lung Kwu Chau.

13
Background information of Chinese White Dolphin
  • WWF Hong Kong believes that the dolphin sanctuary
exists only on paper if there are no proper
management and enforcement actions taken by the
Hong Kong SAR Government - activities that are
detrimental to the dolphins and their habitat
should be banned or strictly controlled within
    the area.
  • High speed ferries have been banned within the
sanctuary, but northern Lantau waters are still
traversed by many types of vessels, including
high-speed ferries, and the volume of traffic has
increased significantly since the new port
  • became operational.

HOI HA WAN
  • There are more than 50 coral species found in
this tiny 260 ha bay, which is an unique site in
terms of the rich diversity of marine life and
easy accessibility which should prove to be a
priceless resource for the enjoyment and
education of the students and people of Hong Kong
    .

19
Location of HOI HA WAN
  • The Marine Life Centre will be situated at the
eastern side of the headland in Hoi Ha Wan, in
the central northern part of Sai Kung West
    Country Park.
  • The Centre will be built over water and there
will be a walkway to link the Centre from the
existing footpath. The footprint of the Centre is
approximately 820 m2. The platform deck will
accommodate the berthing facilities of a
    glass-bottomed boat.
  • The design of the building has been rendered in
tune with the surrounding rural environment. The
pitched roof with large overhanging eaves creates
an impression of a traditional New Territories
village roof line. The proposed basic colour
scheme will adopt soft natural colours such as
green, grey, brown tones in order to blend in
    with the surrounding landscape.

SOKOS ISLAND SOUTH WEST LANTAU
  • The area is found in the western waters of Hong
Kong, which is under the influence of the Pearl
River. It is one of the areas where the Chinese
White Dolphin and Finless Porpoise are most often
found. The area is also rich in other marine
flora and fauna including fish (more than 22
    species), shrimps, crabs, mantis shrimp,
cephalopods and other mollusks. The sheltered bay
of the Soko Islands appear to be a significant
nursery areas for commercial and other fisheries.

22
  • Two areas have been proposed to become a
potential marine park for long-term protection.
As an interim measure, they are proposed to be
declared as Sites of Special Scientific Interest
so as to provide some form of immediate
    protection from any development impacts.

23
HABITAT PROTECTIONGREEN DRAGON (????)
  • To conserve the biodiversity of Hong Kong, WWF HK
believes that key sites should be designated as
'Protected Areas' (PA), which should remain
protected in perpetuity and be appropriately
managed. We aim to safeguard selected
biodiversity hotspots in Hong Kong against
development and promote their protection and
long-term management, thus making Hong Kong a
    "Green Dragon".
