Introduction of Chep Lap Kok Airport

• Its located on Chep Lap Kok and Lam Chau
  Islands.
• Opened in July 1998.
• 1, 248 hectares, almost 4 times the size of the
  old airport Kai Tak.
• Leveled the islands and reclaimed the land from
  the sea.
• The land became an operating facility from a
  construction site.

Development of Hong Kong Airport CORE program

• Facts and figures
• Previously Lantau Island was a Greenfield site
  and eventually it was reclaimed by using landfill
  
• In some extent the airport can be called as a
  mini communal town because it has its own
  transport network and infrastructure. The only
  exception is that the airport is not a major
  residential area.
• Aims of the project
• To hold a greater capacity of passengers and
  cargo (approximately 36 million go through the
  airport per year)
• To avoid congestion in check-in and baggage claim
  areas ( estimated it takes less that 40minutes
  for the baggage to load up and takes less than 15
  minutes the check-in )
• Increase air traffic with the completion of the
  second runway. Approximately 600 planes land and
  take off each day
• The whole project cost 160 million Hong Kong
  dollars in 1998
• To give a better environment for the people who
  live and around the old Kai Tak Path

Benefits of Chep Lap Kok Airport

• Between West Kowloon and Kwai Tsing
• MTR linking Central and North Lantau
• Road Tunnel between Sai Ying Pun and West
  Kowloon.
• First road link between Lantau Island and the
  rest of Hong Kong.
• Tung Chung New Town- 20 000 people in 1998,
  estimated 300 000people in 2011.
• Away from urban area- better environment for 380,
  000 residents affected by the Kai Tak flight
  path.

Problems of Chep Lap Kok Airport

• Reclamation damages environment
• bad environment for Chinese pink dolphins
• suggested12km² marine sanctuary- too little, too
  late
• Sewage outfall and underwater hazardous waste
  pits close by

Conclusions

• Despite of the environmental issues, the airport
  core program has given many benefits to the
  people in Hon Kong
• Most importantly It has created a better
  transport linkup with Hong Kong Island, Kowloon
  and Lantau.
• In addition it has also started off the 9th new
  Town for the ever increasing population of Hong
  Kong.
• The completion of central reclamation and west
  Kowloon reclamation would both lead to a further
  development of the CBD and private public
  housing for over 100,000 residents.
• Another 6 six piers in different destinations of
  Hong Kong would be built in the c1entral
  reclamation for a more variety of transport in
  Hong Kong.
