Hernando Cortes
  • Hernando Cortez was brought into this world in a
    small town of Medellin in southwestern Spain in
    1485.
  • When Cortez was about 18 years old he sailed to
    the island of Hispaniola. After that he went to
    the spanish headquaters in the west Indies.
  • Before Cortez sailed for Diego Velasquez, to help
    him conquer Cuba in 1511, he was a farmer and a
    soldier.
  • Velasquez became the governor and Cortez became
    mayor-judge of Santiago.
  • Juan de Grijalva exposed his discovery of the
    amazing country, Mexico. Velasquez choose Cortez
    to help build a colony.

  • When Cortez got back to Me Mexico City he was
    attacked by the Aztecs. Montezuma was brought in
    to the city to calm his people, but soon enough
    he got stoned. Montezuma died out of his wounds.
  • Cortez was domed, but fortunately three of his
    men killed there Chief. Then the Aztecs
    retreated.
  • With less than 500 of his men alive they traveled
    back to his Indian allies.
  • On August 13,1521, Guatemoc, New Aztec emperor,
    surrendered.

  • Cortez spent next seven years making peace with
    the Indians of Mexico. Also developing mines and
    farmlands.
  • In 1528 he finally went home in great honor by
    Charles V.
  • He later on went back to Mexico as a military
    commander. He searched through Lower California
    from 1534 and also fought the pirates of Algiers
    in 1541. The exact same year he led the
    expedition against the Mayas, Yucatan.
  • Cortez died near Seville in December the year
    1542, even though he died his story will go on
    forever.

Francisco Vasquez de Coronado
  • Francisco was brought into this world in 1510 in
    Salamanca, Spain.
  • He left his home because his parents left the
    fortune to his brother.
  • Francisco soon became one of the governors of New
    Galacia.
  • 1536-1539 Admiral Mendoza head the rumors about
    the seven cities of Gold. Where everywhere was
    made out of gold and jewels. Francisco was sent
    on an Expedition to find these cities.
  • In 1540 Francisco unbaked with 300 soldiers and
    1,000 Indians. Francisco led his army to Arizona
    and New Mexico.
  • Francisco found a settlement of Zuni Indians. He
    considered this settlement to be the city of
    Cibolo. He had no luck finding the gold.
  • Francisco army split up. Half camped in the
    village of Cibolo. Some of his groups separated
    to find the city of gold.
  • Francisco was the first European to go up the Rio
    Grande.

  • He found many settlements and discovered the
    Grand Canyon.
  • In the spring of 1540 he led his army to what is
    now Texas. Then he went to Kansas. In search of
    the Gran Quivera. The rumors said that Gran
    Quivera was full of gold and silver.
  • Francisco returned to the town of Tiguex in the
    winter of 1541. He later went to New Galacia.
    Admiral was upset that they returned empty
    handed.
  • After his expedition Francisco was accused of
    abusing the Indians, but eventually charges had
    been removed. He lost his place as governor.

  • Later he became an official in the government of
    Mexico City.
  • Coronado died in 1552, but his amazing journey
    will never die.

Ferdinand Magellan
  • Ferdinand Magellan was brought into this world in
    northern Portugal and was born in 1480.
  • In 1505 when Magellan was as years old he sailed
    with Francisco de Almedia.
  • In 1511 Magellan went to an expedition to conquer
    Melaka Portugal the spice island at that time.
  • Francisco Serrao went on the voyage to claim
    Portugal. While he was on the voyage he sent
    letters about the spice island. Those letters
    gave Ferdinand an India.
  • Magellan went to the king of Portugal to sponsor
    his journey. The king turned him down.
  • So he went to the king of Spain. The king thought
    his idea was amazing by his plan because Spain
    was looking for different routs to Asia

  • So they sailed through southern Africa. It was
    difficult finding sailors.
  • In September of 1519 his crew sailed to Southern
    Spain in five boats, the Santiago, San Antonio,
    Conception, Trinidad, and the Victoria.
  • There are small groups that sail through the
    Atlantic Ocean and arrived to South America. They
    sailed to the coastline looking for a great
    continent.
  • But they couldnt find a passage through South
    America. So they cruised through every bay or
    river that they came across.

  • In October the year 1520they found a steam and
    called it the Strait of Magellan. It took him 38
    days to cruise through the jeopardous strait.
  • They arrived at the Ocean that Balboa had found a
    couple of years back. Ferdinand named this Ocean
    the Pacific because of its easy winds and waves.
  • One of my ships stranded us, the San Antonio, and
    went back to Spain.
  • Some day in March the year 1521 he arrived in
    Guam (An island in the Pacific)
  • Magellan never got to see the beautiful Spice
    Islands. He died in a war against the Phillippine
    Islands in 1521. Someone shot an arrow through
    his foot and a spear through his heart.

  • Only two ships got the Spice Islands because of
    a fierce storm and Santiago sunk.
  • On the way back to Portugal Ferdinand got
    captured by the Phillippines, whom at that time
    owned the Spice Islands.
  • The only ship that made it all around the world
    was the Victoria. Out of five boats only one made
    it back! Out of 250 men 18 survived! Like I said
    before Magellan never made it back.
