Education
  • Marianne began preparatory school at Metzger
    Institute, Carlisle at age 8. She finishes high
    school and enters Bryn Mawr college at age 17. In
    1909 she graduates and receives an A.B. She
    studied typing at Carlisle Commercial College for
    one year and graduates at age 22.

Family Background
  • Her grandfather, a Presbyterian Pastor, raised
    Marianne. After his death in 1894, she moved to
    Carlisle Pennsylvania with her family.

Moore's Contributions
  • She wrote freedom that was typical of other
    modern poets, often using quotes. Her language
    was exact, she often used very few words to get
    her point across.
  • Marianne was fond of using animals, the natural
    world and professional baseball in her poems.

  • From 1911 to 1915 she worked as a school teacher
    at the Carlisle Indian School. Marianne worked
    at the Hudson Park Branch of the New York Public
    Library from 1921 to 1923.
