Problem Statement
  • How can a virtual space enhance the colaborative
    design process?
  • Connectivity and presence
  • A-synchronicity
  • Motivation
  • Accountability
  • Authority
  • Resources

3
Overview of CODEX
  • An Integrated Virtual Space that integrates
  • Presence, Contributions, Note books,
Presentations, time line, Progress and Success!
  • A Virtual space that is responsive and
deliberative to the goals of creativity
  • Explore, Generate, Test
  • Problem Solve Incubate, fluency/flexibility
  • Usage..motivate (video game like elements)
  • Collaboration with experts and Agents
  • (skill specific and interdisciplinary)

  • The Edit Personal Associations feature allows you
to add personal words and phrases to the
database from your own specialized knowledge,
unique experiences, and ideas. These can then be
linked to the items already in the IdeaBank. You
will find that IdeaFisher is an important tool
for idea management, allowing you to store and
easily reference ideas for future use. The Edit
Personal Bank feature allows you to develop your
specialized knowledge into sets of questions
which then become part of the system. You can
also distribute personal sets of questions to
    other IdeaFisher users.
  • This permits managers, leaders, and other experts
to build their own personal reference source for
solving particular problems, and for making their
    specialized knowledge available to others.

Users and Transactions
  • ISSUES
  • Who is watching, when, what?
  • Who is doing? When, what, why?
  • Can we convince them to do more better!
  • Can Resources be realized any and all internal
    and external.
  • CREATIVITY/ MOTIVATION

Technologies Applicable to the Design Process

Examples

    ndex.htm
A collaborative design website without agent
    support, scheduling, or teams
  • http//www.netmind.com/support/individual.shtml
  • Web update alert agent that can notify
    users of new information
  • http//wwwcssrv.almaden.ibm.com/wbi/
  • Web Browser Intermediaries that can observe
users interactions with the design space and
    augment pages to propose opportunities
  • http//www.cc.gatech.edu/tomiller/7001/project2.h
    tml
  • Remembrance Agents that can search text and
    correlate databases across design participants
    and on the broader internet.

More Examples
  • http//www.mapyourmind.com/software.htm
  • A software based mind mapping tool
  • http//www.ideafisher.com/prod04.htm
  • An idea generation software product that
exemplifies the list of tasks involved in the
    process of many projects.

What Can Be Improved?
  • We see process control w/o collaboration
  • Very little motivation and incentives
  • Up date, observation and searching technologies
    are available
  • Motivational Content exists
  • Some Idea Generation Tools exist

18
CODEX
  • Roles and Responsibilities set up by primary
    USER/s or Faculty
  • Authentication Levels chosen by primary user/s.
  • Authorizations including access to work spaces
  • Collaborative filtering based on the level and
    authority of the contributor..
  • Agents --
  • just like any other users and PERVASIVE!
  • Uses multiple users to make common sense
(accurate) judgments for actions to suggest and
    interface manipulation.

John solved the crank!
Brainstorming
A spreadsheet was used to analyze the motion of
this device. It would be nice to test the
mechanism using strobe photography. It would also
be good to solve the equations of motion. This
is a non-trivial problem. Energy is added
incrementally as the integral of the ellipsoid
input rotation. To solve completely one will
need to constrain the system parameters such as
frequency of rotation and arm and string lengths.
